A Poem of the Inner Beast

Walking through darkness

after my own personal

battles, I yearn for silence

as my ears are deafened

from explosions unlike any

human has endured.

My spirit is tired of walking

this never-ending path for it

has been shattered by the creatures

who co-exist on this

treacherous plain.

My heart is splintered

from the multitude of

dagger wounds thrust through

my back from those I

have trusted with my life.

Trembling, stumbling, weak,

I traipse onto the battlefield

in the midst of a stellar war

between good and evil for

the capture of my soul.

Through blurred eyes

,I see the soldiers - two wolves –

who represent their masters,

equal in size so it is difficult

to predict who shall prevail.

On one side, I sense

purity and love, peace of

mind and heart. I can feel

passion, tenderness, loyalty,

and it overwhelms me.

I see the beast that has survived off

the joy, the bliss, the ecstasy

the world has supplied.

My heart has never felt so

enamored and full as when

my hallucinating mind

acknowledged that piece of me,

for it was only a sliver

of myself that I never knew remained.

On the other side, I saw

the demon that haunts my

waking world - the one that

used to cower in the

shadows of my existence.

It is the one to whom I've fed

my anger, hatred, repulsion.

The one who has consumed

the pain, the grief, the despair.

With that recognition, I felt

utterly afraid, for I knew

that if that side triumphed

I could tear the very soul from

any human who crossed my path.

Witnessing the clash,

I realized there could be

no victory for they were

shredding each other apart,

which only meant one thing:

They were killing me.

It was I who intervened

this bloodshed as I am

the one who controls the

balance. I shall be both –

Good and Evil - for it is the

only way to be. Take peace

in knowing I love to the fullest,

but break me, and tomorrow

will never come...

Like the old Cherokee Proverb says:

"One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil.

It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity,

guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, generosity, empathy, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about this for a minute and then asked the grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

You are both wolves....GOOD HUB!!!
