Raising Baby Dwarf Hamsters

f you are considering raising and selling baby dwarf hamsters because you already have dwarf hamsters as pets, you will be happy to know that it is really easy to do so. However, it is important to also do your research and find out what you need in order to breed healthy baby dwarf hamsters. As a rule of thumb, just know that a mother hamster will gestate for a period of about eighteen to twenty days. They are capable of having up to ten pups but usually they only have five or six. The following periods are crucial to the growth of baby dwarf hamsters.

1. Zero to Ten Days

During this period, you must allow the mother and child to be on their own. This means no touching and no transferring them to another place. On the fourth day you will notice that the babies will get their color. On the seventh they will start growing fur. On the tenth day, their eyes will dilate. They will start to get up on their feet as well.

Caring for the baby dwarf hamsters will domesticate them. So once they are at their day ten stage, you can begin caring for the baby dwarf hamster for short periods. Be guided though by the actions of the mother, as she might be possessive. Extreme caution is needed when you look after her baby, as these babies can be very anxious. Be careful not to let them fall, as this could lead to injury.

2. Ten to Twenty-Eight Days

On the baby hamsters' second week or tenth day to be exact, they are capable of being fed solid foods. Doing so will stimulate their growth so keep feeding them fresh fruits, oats, wheat and even lab blocks (not exclusively though until they are three weeks old).

The tenth day also marks the start of the baby hamster's weaning off nursing from the mother, as they can now feed themselves from the water bottle provided in the cage.

On the twenty-eighth day the baby hamsters are now fully bottle-fed and thus can be transferred to a separate cage. Should there be a situation of a male baby impregnating his mother, the new litter should be transferred out of the cage when she is ready to give birth. Also, the boys must be separated from the girls to avoid inbreeding.

When the baby dwarf hamsters survive through the second period, care and maintenance for them is similar to that of the adult hamsters. They still need their cages cleaned weekly, or even more, depending on their needs.

A fresh supply of food and water is also vital to their growth and must be given on a daily basis. Check their bodies for injuries or other illnesses. The twenty-eight day also marks the day when these babies can be sold and given away.
