One of the things with pregnancy is that you tend to have a lot of questions about what you can and can not do. Pregnancy, especially your first pregnancy is a time when you learn a lot about your body, and about other things. One of the things you need to do is get as educated as you can about the things you should do, and especially the things you should not do when you are pregnant, especially the things that are potential harmful to fetus.

One of the biggest questions of the fashion conscious pregnant woman is "Is hair coloring safe during pregnancy?" Of course with the simple fact that many women dye their hair every couple of months, this is a great question. Are you going to be putting your baby at risk by keeping up with your coloring?

This topics has been debated for years, especially since most pregnant women are not willing to risk harm to their child for the sake of research. However, to date, there's no proof that the chemicals in hair dyes cause birth defects, miscarriages, or any other complications - nor are there reliable studies that prove these substances are safe. So, I guess that says that the debate will continue. No one really knows.

However, the real question is whether or not the beauty enhancement is worth the possible risk. Many people recommend phasing back to your natural color as you plan to get pregnant so that when you do, you do not feel the need to dye your hair.

Because there is no conclusive evidence either way, mostly because we don't yet know enough about these chemicals, some doctors say that pregnant women should avoid hair dyes (or at least minimize their contact with them), especially during the first trimester.

Many women continue with their hair treatments their entire pregnancy without a problem at all. It is also believed that highlighting or streaking your hair, is less likely to cause a problem because both processes involve less scalp contact. Thus they may be safer.

Another option for the health conscious pregnant women who have fear of hurting their child via hair dye, is to use a vegetable-based products, such as henna, which is also considered safe. These are not as harsh, and while the dye may not last as long, it also does not put a child at risk.

There are some safety precautions to take if you choose to dye your hair when pregnant. The first precaution is to wait until your through your first trimester. This is the most critical time for grown and if damage is going to be done by chemicals, it would be during this time. Also, if you decide to color your hair yourself, wear plastic or latex gloves to minimize absorption of the chemicals through your skin, and don't leave the product on your scalp any longer than necessary.

Feeling good about how you look is very important. So, getting your hair dyed is important if it means you are going to feel better about your appearance. Many women struggle with the changes to their body when they are pregnant. So do what you must, but be sure that you talk to your doctor. They may have some brands to recommend, or can help you choose a better option if they think that it is going to be harmful to you.

Thousands of women dye their hair while pregnant, and have had no negative side effects from it that they know of, however, you may not want to risk it.
