Infections in the lower urinary tract, vagina, cervix or the

fallopian tubes can make the sexual act painful.

In some women, there is a deficiency of estrogen. This

prevents the formation of lubricating fluids during sexual

arousal. Such a dry vagina will cause pain during the

reception of the penis.

In women who are taking radiation therapy (especially women

who have cancers), there will be a severe pain in the

vaginal tract during intercourse.

The condition of dyspareunia can have long-lasting effects on

the sexual metabolism of a woman. After several incidences of

painful sexual intercourse, the woman may lose all her desire

for sex and even suffer from anorgasmia.

Treatment for dyspareunia is symptomatic. The condition is

quite easy to diagnose, but the doctor would need to perform a

detailed study into the cause. Once the cause is found out,

treatment would be commenced. A part of the treatment is by

making technical variations in the method of sex, such as

advising the woman to take the penis in her hand and guide it

into the vagina, use of profuse amounts of lubricants, etc.
