Home Safety Alert !

Have you tried being bitten by a bee in your own backyard? Or a grill burn while grilling meat for dinner? These are only two of the so many accidents that could happen in your own homes. To avoid further accidents brought about mostly by ignorance and unpreparedness for emergencies, we have compiled some of the more common sources of panic at home.

Animal Bite

Apply pressure to control bleeding. Then flush wound with water, cleanse with mild soap and flush again. Do not put bandage on the wound. Bacteria can get trapped in it, and may cause infection. Consult a doctor to determine if there is a need for antibiotic or rabies shots.

Bug Bites

Wash mosquito chigger or fly bite with lukewarm and soapy water. Do not scratch. This may expose the wound to various infections. To control the itch. Use calamine solution, or a paste of baking soda and water. If an allergic reaction, fever or infection follows consult a doctor immediately.

To remove a tick, pull out the insect with tweezers or fingers covered with cloth. Don't burn the tick with a match. You will only irritate the skin and the tick may burrow into the skin deeper. Scrape away any remaining bug parts. Wash the area with soap and water, and swab with rubbing alcohol. Watch for signs of infection that might appear within 7 to 10 days after a tick bite. A Lyme disease can start with a circular "bull's-eye" rash at the bite site or elsewhere and flu like symptoms such as joint and muscle aches, weakness, fever, and sore throat. There are other symptoms of other diseases such as headache, stiff neck and a blotchy red or purplish rash. If these symptoms are observed, consult your doctor.

Sun Blindness

When your eyes are protected from UVB rays that reflect off the water, the cornea can become burned, causing excessive tearing, pain, redness and hazy vision. Put a patch over the affected eye. The cornea should repair itself within 24 to 48 hours. If the eye is still painful or discharges pus, consult a doctor immediately.

Grill Burn

Run cool water or place cool, wet compresses on affected area until pain subsides. Apply an antibiotic ointment and leave open to the air. If a blister forms. Do not break. Cover it with a gauze bandage to protect it. If the blister bursts, blot dry and cover with a sterile bandage. If burn covers a large or delicate area, such as palms of the hands, seek medical help. This could cause a permanent disfigurement or disability.

Cuts

Apply pressure with a clean, dry cloth to control bleeding. Then thoroughly cleanse with mild soap and lukewarm water, and rinse to remove debris. Apply an antibiotic ointment with a cotton swab, and cover with dry, sterile gauze. You may need stitches and a tetanus shot if cut is deep or more than an inch long.
