ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE:

i) Sap wood is white and heart wood is green emitting fragrance.

ii) Teak wood does not shrink, crack offers resistance to termites, hard and durable, used for making furnitures, wood-work etc.

iii) It is used in ships building, boats, bridges etc.

iv) It is used for making cardboards, railway sleepers etc.

FIBRE YIELDING PLANT - COTTON

DESCRIPTION:

1. Binomial - Gossypium barbadense

2. Family - Malvaceae

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE:

i) It is a cash crop.

ii) Lint fibre (seed surface fibre) is used in textile industry.

iii) Seed oil is used for the manufacture of vanaspathi.

iv) Cotton flour is used for making bread and biscuit.

v) Cotton seed cakes is used as organic manure.

vi) Cotton is used in stuffing pillows, cushions, mattresses etc.

vii) Cotton is used in making rubber tyres, carpet, blankets and cordages.

viii) Fatty acids obtained from the oil is used in the manufacture of insecticide, fungicides and plastics.

ix) Cotton is a basic raw materials for cellulose industries.

OIL YIELDING PLANT - GROUNDNUT

DESCRIPTION:

1. Binomial - Arachis hypogea

2. Family - Fabaceae

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE:

i) Groundnut oil is edible, used in cookery and in the manufacture of vanaspathi.

ii) Groundnut kernel is rich and cheap source of vegetable portein.

iii) Oil is used for making soap.

iv) Oil is used as illuminant, lubricant.

v) Oil cake is used as cattle feed and organic manure.

vi) Groundnut shell is used as activated carbon.

vii) A nutritious pea nut butter is prepared from kernels

FOOD YIELDING PLANT-RICE

DESCRIPTION:

1. Bionomial - Oryza sativa

2. Family - Poaceae

IMPORTANT VARIETIES:

IR-8, Ponni, Kannagi, Kavery, Ganga.

USES OF RICE:

i) Rice is the chief source of carbohydrate.

ii) Parched rice is crisp to eat.

iii) The flattened par boiled rice is known as flaked rice, it's good for break fast food and for preparing different food items.

iv) Sake is an alcoholic beverage in Japan, prepared by the fermentation of rice.

v) Bran is used as a cattle food.

vi) Bran oil is edible and used for preparation of vanaspathi, making soap, bio-diesel and also in textile and leather industry.

vii) Bran wax is used in chocolate industry and making lip-sticks.

viii) Paddy husk is used in brick kilns.

ix) Straw is used as cattle feed, and for making bats, roper, mats etc.
