EVE Online
EVE Online

The storyline of the EVE Online game is driven by the four main Empires. When starting out, players create a character from one of the many subraces of each Empire. From there, they can specialise, choosing their basic attributes and starting skills. This page fills in some of the history and differences between these four Empires that make up the bulk of the storyline in EVE.

The Caldari State
The Caldari State

The Caldari

The Caldari State takes capitalism to new heights. A select few mega-corporations have divided the state between them, controlling every aspect of Caldari society. These mega-corporations are made up of thousands of smaller corporations, which range from specialist industrialists through to paper pushing legal organisations. Every aspect of Caldari life is managed by a corporation, with land owner by a corporation that leases it to citizens, and special corporations setup purely to handle government and policing matters.

To an outsider, this might seem like a dictatorship, but all corporations are bound by Caldari laws and customs, which are intertwined with Caldari life. Combined with the fierce competition between corporations, and a stable, consumer based society results.

The Caldari State is the third largest empire, but mere size alone is never a measure of influence. The mighty Caldari corporations do business in all areas of space, and can be found in any system which has a station. The resulting Caldari economy is a fearsome powerhouse, with military production and capability rivalling that of the much larger Amarrian empire. Given the meddlesome and unscrupulous nature of the Caldari, they can be found involved in most conflicts - "Where there's profit, there's Caldari" as the saying goes.

With a strong military tradition running through Caldari society, based on their long and bloody war of independance from the Gallente, conflicts with a single Caldari corporation can often quickly escalate, drawing more corporations in - and just as quickly subsiding, as the powerful and militant Caldari bring devastating force to bear.

The Gallente Federation
The Gallente Federation

The Gallente

The Gallenteans generate extreme reactions in all who meet them. Strong libertarians and defenders of individual freedom, or self righteous and pompous meddlers. Descended from Tau Ceti French colonists, the Gallente are all about free will, human rights, and living the good life.

Gallentean society is just as polarised. Many of the wealthiest people in EVE are Gallenteans, yet a high percentage of their society live in poverty. The free wheeling Gallentean society, with it's strong belief in the individual and their rights, offers many opporunities to get rich. Equally, it is just as easy to lose everything and slide to the bottom of the social ladder.

Entertainment is one of Gallente society's greatest specialities. From porn flicks through to lavish stage productions of classic works, their media production is immense. Their wealthy and hedonistic life style also produces some of EVE's most elaborately luxurious space yachts, and entire stations devoted to every pleasure imaginable. Whatever your mind or body can think of or desire, the Gallenteans will have available.

The Gallente Federation is home to pockets of all of EVE's races. Their accepting attitude and liberal attitude means that refugees, new races, or ideological outcasts from other Empires are all welcome in the Federation.

The Caldari were initially part of the Gallente Federation, but deep seating differences and growing animosity escalated to a bitter civil war, resulting in the Caldari being exiled from the Federation. The two Empires warred for generations, resulting in a stale mate between their evenly matched forces. This gradually grew into an uneasy and fragile peace will still holds to this day.

The Minmatar Republic
The Minmatar Republic

The Minmatar

The Minmatar are the toughest race in EVE Online. Fiercely independent, they are comprised of different tribes and clans. In the distant past they warred constantly amongst themselves, but over the years they have learned to co-operate. Clans still maintain their own personal identities and territories, though, and political debate in the Minmatar Republic is often lively.

Once technically superior to other races, after the invasion of the Amarr, the Minmatar were scattered to the wind. Oppressed by centuries of slavery and facing constant hostility from the Amarr, the Minmatar have managed to establish a stable Republic.

A third of the Minmatar population remain as slaves to the Amarr, with a fifth also residing in the Gallente Federation. The bulk of the remainder are spread across the universe - many in the Minmatar Republic, but many more working as freelancers, or straying to the dark side of the law and indulging in less than legal activities.

Minmatar ships have a very unique look - often likened to "flying spare parts shops" and "space-faring trash cans". Do not be fooled - Minmatar ships are light, extremely fast, and very manoeuvrable. Their choice of projectile weapons means they can quickly chose a damage type appropriate to any situation, and nearly all of their ships have missile capabilities as well.

Due to their history, the Minmatar are often seen as the trouble makers of EVE Online - barely an Empire, barely legal activities, barely space-worthy ships. Full of surprises, they are worth keeping an eye on.

The Amarr Empire
The Amarr Empire

The Amarr

The Amarr are the largest empire in EVE Online, covering over 40% of the inhabited worlds. Their secular society is deeply religious, from the ruling Emperor down to the lowest classes. Slavery is not only accepted as part of their religion, but it is demanded that the Amarr enslave the lesser races and show them the true path.

This has led to many unfortunate incidents over the centuries, with the Amarr conquering and enslaving all the races they have encountered - most notably the Minmatar.

The Emperor has absolute authority, and beneath him are the Five Heirs, who rule in his name, dividing the empire between them. Heavy use of cyber implants keep the Emperor and Five Heirs alive for over 500 years, make succession a rare and fiercely contested event.

After re-discovering Jump drive technology, the Amarrian Empire began a campaign of conquest and expansion. Having enslave the Minmater, the Amarr came up against the Gallente, whose economic and military might provoked a stalemate.

The Amarr then came across the Jove, with predictable results. The sluggish Amarr Navy where no match for the highly evolved Jove, who forced them to retreat with heavy losses. During this time of upheaval the Minmatar revolt took place, rebelling against their slave masters and fleeing.

The Amarr are now more cautious, slowing down their expansion and ambitions within EVE Online. However, they remain haughty and forceful in their dealings with other races, convinced of their superiority and purity in the eyes of their Emperor and Gods.
