Eagle Pack Dog Food - Healthy Dog Foods?

Canned products made by Menu Foods.

Dog Food reviews are based on if Gluten, Corn, Soy, Wheat, Animal Digest are present in your pet's cat food. Extra points are awarded for the good stuff in the cat food. Points are deducted if by-products and other junk are used to produce these pet foods.

Personal Note - My readers are reporting to me that Eagle Pack pet foods are not providing good nutrition for their pets. I've had reports of cats and dogs digging in the trash and asking for additional food. A healthy pet food should require only about 1/4 to 1/2 the ration of regular pet foods. This does not seem to be the case with Eagle Pack Pet Foods. I feel like the reports I have received are valid and worth a word of caution to my readers.

Is this, yet another, case of false advertising? Does Eagle Pet Foods made their products to the standards they tell us Eagle Pet Foods use? I'm having my doubts! - Susan Peters

I was feeding the Lamb and Rice, it seems the Sardine, and Senior varieties are a little better.

I have a 1 1/2 yr old male boxer that just got over an infected prostate that almost cost him his life due to a vets misdiagnosis, he lost all of his weight and looks like a skeleton. He is getting better but I question what brand of dry dog food is good for him. There are so many conflicting answers regarding which brand is good or bad. My NEW vet recommended Eagle Pack, but I just don't know. Please let me know what is the best brand to buy.

Courtney,

Does you vet have any of the Eagle Pack on his/her shelves? Sounds to me like your Vet is realizing there is a problem with pet foods. I don't suggest you use this product but your vet sound like a smart person. Older vet?

I am on vacation but will reply soon with a full Pet Food Danger Gauge report.

Yes my vet has Eagle Pack on her shelves for sale. This vet is in her 40's and saved my boxer's life after my original vet darn near killed him, but that's another story in itself. I am just so confused about what is a good brand & what isn't. My vet likes the Holistic line of Eagle Pack. Petco told me that it's not a good brand because it has gluten or something in it. I went to the country feed store and asked them what to buy given my dog's current condition having lost all of his weight & they told me to use NutriSource, or Diamond. I questioned that & said that I had heard that both brands had been recalled at one time & that Diamond had been found to have manure in it and they called me a liar and said neither had ever been recalled. So you can see my dilema with not knowing what to buy as I keep getting conflicting answers all the way around. All I want is to feed Moe something that is as healthy as possible to put his weight back on and maintain it. The feed store sent me home with some sample packs of different brands of dry foods so tell me what you think of these brands: Nature's Variety (Instinct Rabbit Meal Formula Grain Free), Now! Adult Formula(Grain Free Turkey with Duck), EVO (The Ancestral Diet Red Meat Large Bites), Solid Gold(MMillennia Beef and Barley Formula), INNOVA, Canidae(Maintenance Formula), EVO(The Ancestral Diet Large Bites). Please help me out with this!

Courtney,

Change feed stores.  The one you have visited must be getting huge profits for selling these foods.  Most of the foods you have listed have a history of recalls and have a current Class Action filed against these companies for false advertising - stating these foods are healthy for your pets.  As for Diamond pet foods we are talking years of recall history with these people.  Believe me, these people know Diamond has a history of recalls!

I'll look into those foods for you and let you know what links I have and which foods I need to get reviews for.  I have been on vacation and today is my first day back so I am pretty back-logged.  Give me a couple of days to work on this for you.

Thanks,

Susan

Courtney,

I have completed a review for one of the formulas. Looks like this is all beer/wine making by-producdts. Doesn't get my vote.

Hi Susan, I am just at my wits end with this whole dog food thing! I can't find a brand that is ok for my dog! I guess I could make my own dog food, but I wouldn't even know where to begin as far as what ingredients to use! I find it quite sickening that there so far as I've seen is no safe dog food out there on the market. My dog almost died from his illness and all I want to do is find something benefical for him to gain his weight back and maintain it, and it looks as though I've hit a brick wall every where I turn. Based on your reviews I don't feel comfortable about feeding him anything on the market! Did you get a chance to review the EVO or INNOVA? As for the feed store, yeah I could tell they were very arogant and quite obviously felt they were experts on the dog foods. It's one thing to actually know something and have the proof to back it up, but it's another when you are so full of yourself you won't even consider that someone might know something you don't. I meant the feed store people, not you. Well if you EVER find a safe dog food please let me know!

Courtney,

I want to warn you Innova/Evo has a class action filed against the company for false advertising - stating their products are healthy for pets. I'll work on those reviews for you.

Did you get the feeling the feed store just didn't care about your pets? I'm so sorry.

I have a 11 year old Cocker Spaniel that has gone through many health isses over the years from a broken back to breast cancer to bladder stones and lastly a rare blood disorder that nearly took her life. I had been feeding her science diet but 3 years ago changed her to eagle pack becase she needed a diet that was not high in minieral content. She has been on the eagle pack holistic senior now for 3 years and seems to be doing very well though she sleeps a lot, but I attribute that mostly o her older age.

Can you please let me know what it is that is wrong with the eagle pack holistic senior food and would canidae be a better choice for her? I also just got a 8 week old pit bull puppy and would like to start her on a good dry dog food, can you recommend one to me? tahnk you so much, blessings to you.

Mary,

Eagle Pack is a bag full of beer/wine by-products. Canidae has tested positive for acetaminophen in tests done by Expertox but no recalls were ever issued.

I would suggest Orijen. Orijen has held up well to the Pet Food Danger Gauge.

What does beer/wine by products mean, I dont know what that is? Also what was the test results for the acetaminophen, was it taces or was it a high percentage? When was the tests done and has the manufacturer changed anything since then?

Mary,

The pet food companies are buying the bottom of the barrel by-products, the stuff left over after producing beer and/or wine products. Included in these by-products are several vitamins/minerals (not from good sources), fermintation products, brewers yeast (listed under several names), barley, millet and rice. AAFCO has approved use of these ingredients even though the by-products are known to harm pets.

I do not know if the acetaminophen has been removed or not. The company never owned up to putting acetaminophen in their products. Here is further information on the acetaminophen reports http://www.petfoodrecallfacts.com/lab.html

TY for the link i went and read it..what i found interesting is that the other foods were positively identified..but when they refer to the canidea they say it was a food sample that was beleived to be canidae. Sounds like they dont even know for sure what food it was.

Hi Susan, thank you for all the valuable info you have provided. I do have one more brand I would like you to check out since I couldn't find it on your review list, your safe food list, or your dangerous food list. It's called: NATIVE performance dog food Energy Level 3. It's made by Kent Feeds. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee that you can get a full refund from anywhere you purchased it at if you are dissatisfied for any reason. Their # is 1-800-552-9620 www.kentfeeds.comThe company's general offices are located in Muscatine, Iowa. From what I've read on the bag it seems ok, but I am no expert and would greatly value your opinion on this brand of dog food.
