In addition to market research studies that try to gain insights from respondent’s behavior or answers to a series of questions, there are also medical research studies that gather groups of people into clinical research. The persons in these medical research studies become to put it mildly, volunteers to test and verify the side effects of the latest drugs.

Just like research studies, medical research studies will most often ask for specific traits from respondents, from having a sexual defect, to having Hepatitis, overactive bladder, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, etc. The list is endless!

Many people have different reasons why they participate. Reasons such as wanting to do contribute and help your fellow man or woman and help medical research find that elusive elixir to treat any one of our human conditions, or like many other participants, they see clinical research as an income supplement.

The US government has a one page informational site created by the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) to give you basic information as to what to ask the researchers, basic information as to why clinical trials are important and a contact information if you have any questions about clinical research.

More information can be found at the American Diabetes Association website. The website has a frequently asked questions list that covers things from basic questions about clinical trials to what happens to the data after the research has been completed. 

I like this series of bullet points that the site gives you as a point of reference to start your initial questions that you should ask the researchers.

Prior to starting, you will have to pass the eligibility screening requirements of the research.

Below is a post with the screening requirements I found on Craigslist. This company is looking for participants for a high cholesterol clinical research study. Looking at the study specifications, it looks pretty decent, you don't really give up much to participate, and the compensation of up to $420 looks pretty good.

Clinical research studies last up to months whereby the participant will be given medicines and will have to take multiple visits to the medical office for checkups. The incentive from a clinical research can be a few hundred dollars for persons who have foot fungus to a few thousand dollars with participants who have Hepatitis C.

The dollar amount will be dependent upon the focus of the research. Have you noticed that the more dangerous the disease the more money you get? Unlike regular focus groups or online surveys where you get paid less than a few dollars for an online survey to less than a hundred dollars for a 2 hour focus group. Clinical research studies on the other hand pay out thousands of dollars for participants who are in pretty bad medical situations, however participants will be in a study for a longer period of time to test the new drugs side effects. So the worse off you are, the better in terms of getting paid more in clinical research studies.

The best place to find clinical studies in your area would be your local craigslist.

To earn money from clinical trials, go through these steps. Please note that Los Angeles where I live has a lot of clinical research ads in craigslist.

Type in http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites in your browsers address window. Choose the city where you live.

On the left column, look for the “Search Craigslist” text box and type “clinical trials”, "clinical research" or "medical research".

Below the text box, change the drop down selection to “Jobs” and then click that little side arrow.

If you don’t find anything, think of another search term!

The Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom has created the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) which has a large database for you to search for a clinical trial that interests you: http://www.ctu.mrc.ac.uk/

The World Health Organization has a database that encompasses a few countries including Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Germany and a few others. Here's the search page : http://www.who.int/trialsearch/

Here's some samples I found in the Craigslist Los Angeles area. Don't know much about them, so you have to do your fact checking about the companies doing the clinical trials. When thinking of participating in clinical research do the background checks!
