Earth Day Business To Flex Your Social Media Marketing Muscles
55Flex Those Social Media Networking Muscles For Earth Day 2009
'First, ten'
This, in two words, is the secret of new media marketing according to Seth Godin in a recent blog post on the subject and to most people this might seem a simple step to take.
"Find ten people. Ten people who trust you/respect you/need you/listen to you...
Those ten people need what you have to sell, or want it. And if they love it, you win. If they love it, they'll each find you ten more people (or a hundred or a thousand or, perhaps, just three). Repeat.
If they don't love it, you need a new product. Start over." (quote Seth Godin)
Seth Godin's recent post certainly makes you think a little doesn't it? Take a quick look again and then read on and I'm going to show you how to see where you are in the social media battleground right now; fighting on the losing side with only a couple of old school friends standing beside you in the facebook arena or out there leading the charge with an army of followers ready to shed blood and tears as you take them on towards the next great adventure in MySpace, Youtube or Squidoo...
Seth goes on...
"Your idea spreads. Your business grows. Not as fast as you want, but faster than you could ever imagine.
This approach changes the posture and timing of everything you do.
You can no longer market to the anonymous masses. They're not anonymous and they're not masses. You can only market to people who are willing participants. Like this group of ten.
The timing means that the idea of a 'launch' and press releases and the big unveiling is nuts. Instead, plan on the gradual build that turns into a tidal wave. Organize for it and spend money appropriately. The fact is, the curve of money spent (big hump, then it tails off) is precisely backwards to what you actually need.
Three years from now, this advice will be so common as to be boring. Today, it's almost certainly the opposite of what you're doing."
It's that simple right? So, here's the deal guys...
I don't want your business (not right now, although yes it might be good to work together in the future perhaps, who knows) but I'd like to see if I have any sway over your actions and if you have any sway over the actions of others in order to benefit mother earth and flex those social networking muscles with some Earth Day Business I have on my mind – that would be interesting in itself.
Through the new media landscape of facebook groups, discussions, chats and content exchange and other social networking sites I've grown to know and like many uniquely different people for many different reasons. We are all individuals and yet sharing the same small space within our chosen social network and I kind of like that. I guess you do too.
So, I'm going to ask you to take action in two very simple ways that won't benefit me any more than that – I'll simply know if I'm leading the charge or getting the shinola kicked out of me in the middle of some online peat bog and you will too if you follow my two simple steps!
I want to invite you all to take part in the Earth Day Birthday campaign which is running full speed towards April 22 under the leadership and direction of my friends Simon Ford and Glen Crosier. If you don't know what the campaign is about follow the link at the bottom of the page but before you do here is your call to action;
Save $10 (or £, € or any other currency) and put it to one side for the Earth Day Birthday campaign. Social Traffic will give you a few ideas how you can make a difference to the planet while saving your $10 but if you don't have the time then the $10 will just have to do. The money will not be going to Social Traffic but directly to a charity making a positive impact on the planet so keep hold of it and we'll tell you where to donate over the next couple of weeks after you've taken action.
If you're using facebook or another social networking site pass this message on as a note by copying and pasting everything from the top into a new note or email and sending it on to 20 friends who you believe would value two things. Our planet and its future and a knowledge of where they stand in the social media networking landscape.
Once you've done that don't forget to play your part in the plan to save mother earth while flexing your social networking muscles in all the right places.
Social Traffic is a community of like minded people with a desire to come together to leave a positive legacy for our children which we can all be proud of. Want to know what we're doing right now?

Done.
Even though the 10x10 group has already been launched. I will be sending this as a note to 20 specially selected FB Friends. Thanks for the idea and the words.
Peace and Love,

Hi Neil...love the idea of just connecting with 10 people that I have a trusting, respectful relationship with and let it grow exponentially from there. Isn't it extraordinary that technology allows us to connect all over the world from our places in Cork, Galway, Florida, Australia etc. Amazing! Anne agw.edbd

Flexing those muscles right along with you, Neil. No matter how many online "friends" we have, we need to find our ten that are smart, committed, and socially conscious. Who will sign on to the Earth Day Birthday campaign? I'm excited about those ten friends ... imagine what we'll accomplish together!
Best,
Jennifer
