Earthquake Watch: Reno
83Are Earthquakes Connected?
Reno, Nevada began experiencing a swarm of tiny earthquakes one week after Wells, Nevada experienced a 6.0 earthquake on February 21, 2008. Will Reno get hit with a massive earthquake?
One week before Illinois had experienced two earthquakes above 4.0 on April 21 residents near the Ruby fault lines which is about 25 miles from Wells, Nevada heard "airquakes" several times a day for one week. The "airquakes" sounded like a cross between explosions and thunder. One the east coast they are known as Seneca Guns.
In the month of April numerous tiny earthquakes have occurred almost daily near Wells, Nevada while the earth quakes have been increasing in strength in the Mogul area just six miles from Reno, Nevada.

The USGS link above covers earthquakes world wide, gives a earthquake preparedness plan, and amusing stories about the mysterious boom known as the Seneca Guns.
How does a 6.0 quake feel? The Wells quake was rough and when you experience it you know it. I awoke at 6 am hearing what sounded like explosions. I struggled to stand up but the room was shaking hard and fast. The furniture was grinding itself. The lights flikered once. There were numerous strong aftershocks spread hours apart. I thought about running out of the house but it was 6 am in February with a thick sheet of ice outside my door. I was over 25 miles away from the epicenter.
On Friday April 25, 2008 at 11:40 pm Reno awoke to the 4.7 quake that came from the Mogul area. That 4.7 event was followed by 50 aftershocks! Highrise casinos did sway, liquor stores lost wine bottles, and stick built homes grew hair line cracks.
On Sunday April 27, 2008 Reno Gazette Journal on their website stated there were 25 minors earthquakes today.

On Monday April 28, 2008 Reno residents awoke at 4:30 am to a 4.2 earthquake. 150 Earthquakes rocked Reno since friday April 25, 2008 stated http://www.krnv.com website.

Hi Jason. There have been no reports of animals acting strangly before the earthquakes. If the creatures acted strangly before the quakes so far no one has reported it.
I think if the swarm of earthquakes continue around Mogul then Reno may experience the BIG One.
That is nuts. Living in CA. I am sorta waiting for it to come our way next. Did you eventually get used to it?
You heard about the Virgina tornados?
just caught the rest of the hub. I didn't even know there was a volcano in Nevada.
Really good information.
I never got used to the shakes. When I lived in Reno each earthquake was different. For some the floor rolled sideways back and forth. During one Halloween night the windows pounded fast and the futon I was sitting on jumped up a little bit off the floor.
I am not aware of any live volcanos in Reno.
Tell me about your earthquake experience.
Washington state in 95ish. Watchin' baseball of course, heard a loud noise, looked out side the window, thought it was a big truck or something passing by.
It was one of the rolling ones. Only a 3.7 but I was about 10 miles from the epicenter.
Scared the crap out of me, I am still terrified of earthquakes. Needless to say NOAA issued a prediction of a big one happening in Ca. within 30 years with a 99.7 % possibility.
Darn them....grrrr. No just kidding, probabaly better to be prepaired then off gaurd huh.
Thirty years waiting for the big one with a 99.7% chance sounds too soon because it means that it would be in our lifetime. I'd prefer never, but I guess it is better to be prepared. :(
well there were three yesturday in good ole cali. No damage thank God. Didn't feel them either, but I gots me corner all picked out just in case.
I'm flying to Las Vegas soon and all this talk of earthquakes in Nevada makes me nervous.
Just found this hub, Raven King, and am fascinated by your personal account and Sandra's too--I've experienced several hurricanes, one tornado, but no earthquakes--yet-(big yet) I'll keep checking back for others comments. Good work!
Hi Sandra. If I go to http://www.seismo.unr.edu then I can click on the map for Calfornia or Nevada and find out how many earthquakes were experienced in one day for a specific location. California has been having numerous earthquakes. It is good to be prepared but can we be prepared enough without worrying too much?
Angela, I haven't checked Las Vegas seismic activity and it probably won't be shaking during your visit. I wish I could visit Las Vegas so much has changed over the years. Have an awesome but good journey.
Hi Robie. The tornado sounds the scariest. What do you think?
Well, I didn;t actually experience the tornado--it went through the edge of town and a day later we took a ride over to see the damage. it was amazing. One side of the street was fine and the other devistated-- you could see the narrow destructive path of the thing....and it was scary but I was only about 11 at the time so I didn't know from scary LOL--
The closest I 've ever been to a tornado was when Mom was driving on a Texas highway and I was about eight and when I looked out the window I saw a funnel cloud moving across a field. It was far away but I still remember it.
Do the minor quakes usually lead to a big one or can they go on for years? Good Hub! Thanks! :)
That is a good question Tom. I think the experts are keeping this a secret.
We had some strange rumblings that shook the windows in March and an eagle collided with a semi truck on the highway. That eagle is recouperating in Spring Creek animal hospital. My question is: are the mysterious rumblings connected with strange bird behavior?
Some residents of Elko county said that they had experienced those rumblings for years so it is possible to have actual earthquakes going on years.
SCARY! We don't live in an earthquake prone area, thank heavens, but we do experience the effects of hurricanes and occasional tornadoes. Guess there are few perfect places to live that escape the effects of "Mother Nature" catching our attention.
Hi Peggy. The effects of tornadoes and hurricanes are scary and dangerous. If you find a place that "Mother Nature" takes it easy please let me know. But why is Mother Nature trying to get our attention? That is a good question.
I have expereinced an earthquake it was the quake of 89 and a friend of mine moved there so my parents sent me to visit, it was horrific! I have not visited SF since then even though my husband and I lived in a Beach City in LA we experienced tremors needless to say we did eventually move. I am fearful of them they are not predictable this is an excellent read and makes me think so when we visit Reno again I am going to pray that a Earthquake does not rock us or I may have a serious panic attack. lololo :)
Hi Aevans. Wow, after that I wouldn't want to go to SF either.
That was a very powerful earthquake and a scary experience.
So far, we haven't had strong quakes lately so, I think your trip will be good but, just to be sure I 'll be praying for your trip to be quiet and uneventful. Many hugs! :)
Is There a Volcano in Reno's Future?
Is There A Volcano In Reno's Future?
Daily earthquakes occurring in Reno for two months. The air grew hazy from distant dust storms in the Gobi desert and forrest fires in southern Russia which gives Reno a surreal feeling. Residents feel that they are waiting for someting to happen. Some might be thinking of Pompeii. Some of the Reno residents wonder if a volcano is going to errupt?
The expert seismologists and geologists say NO.

I' read that animals sometimes act "funny" before an earthquake. Are there any reports on this inthe Reno area?
That asked, what is your prediction? Do you think there will be one?
