Do you like the "cottage" look in home décor?  One of the easiest and least expensive looks to acquire, the look of cottage charm is cozy, warm and inviting and will make even your first time guests feel right at home.

The cottage look is a combination of the timeless and classic English Country décor and the relatively new Shabby Chic.

Start small when trying to get the look of easy cottage charm throughout your house. Make small changes to existing furniture and accessories and as you continue to decorate, you will find yourself leaning towards furnishings and other items that reflect this type of taste.

Some easy tips to get the cottage look incorporated into your décor include the following:

Paint your Furniture White

While white woodwork may not go well with other décor styles, it blends in well with cottage décor and makes the house look brighter and more alive. Don't throw away your existing furniture; instead just paint them white. You may not want to do this to all your furniture however. If you have an heirloom table that has been handed down the generations, you simply cannot ruin it by painting it white. Leave the classics alone and paint a few select pieces to give you the look you want.

Think Earth Colors

Light beige, blues, greens and yellows all work well with the cottage look, especially when used in contrast to white woodwork.  When thinking country cottage décor, think earth colors and flat tones. No black, no silver, no metallic shades and definitely no high gloss laminates.

Use Over-sized Throw Pillows Everywhere

Large throw pillows strewn everywhere add color and give the room a cozy look. Watch the instant transformation in every room them as you throw a few of these over-sized throw pillows on your sofas and chairs and on your bed as well.

To the Floor of Things

You want a comfortable feel without being to formal. Floor boards covered in traditional  braided area rugs will bring a feeling of country and nostalgia to your room. For a more feminine style opt for vintage floral area rugs in pastel colors. And for a natural cottage look, choose a sisal area rug.

Bring Nature Indoors

Country is synonymous with nature. Bunches of flowers can bring nature into every room and also add a profusion of color without being overbearing. No need for elaborate arrangements and delicate flowers- a bunch of wild flowers in a vase goes fabulously with cottage décor.

Get Charmed by Curtains

The cottage look is warm and cozy and light, flowery curtains that flutter in the breeze will help you achieve just that look. Ditch the blinds and heavy drapes; they belong to other décor trends and do nothing to enhance your cottage décor.

Slip on the Slip-Covers

The cottage look is informal but pulled together and slipcovers do just that. They are inviting and give a room a casual, yet pulled-together look.  Slipcovers can also work wonders on worn or older furniture and are easier to keep clean as they can be easily removed and washed.

Bring on Those Lamps

Table lamps incorporate the look of cottage charm much better than floor lamps, which are usually too opulent or modern to fit in with the more laid-back cottage charm.

Incorporating easy cottage charm into your home is not something that you can hope to acquire overnight. Transform your house in small steps and bask in the coziness and warmth as it slowly begins to acquire the cottage look you dream of.
