This pattern is incredibly fast and simple and can easily be finished in an afternoon. I used a thick cotton thread and a size 0 lace crochet hook to create an elegant, yet functional, coaster to place under a teapot that tends to drip. Experiment with thread and hook size to find the right combination for the weight and look desired.

How to make the doily

Ch 10 and join with sl to form ring

Round 1: ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Join

Round 2: ch 10 and complete a cross stitch as follows: Thread over twice, insert hook in 8th ch from hook, draw thread through (4 loops on hook), thread over once skip 1 dc and insert hook in next dc. Draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over and take loops off 2 at a time, 5 times. * ch 3, thread over 4 times, insert hook in next dc and draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over and take of two loops at a time twice, then thread over, skip 1 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over and take off loops two at a time, 5 times. Ch 3, dc in center point of the cross, thus completing the cross. Repeat from * around until there are 8 cross sts around the circle. Join last ch 3 with sl st in 7th ch of ch-10 first made.

Round 3: 5 sc in each space.

Round 4 and 5: sc in each sc of precious round.

Round 6: ch 5, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join last ch 2 in 3rd ch of ch-5 first made.

Round 7: 3 sc in each space.

Round 8: sc in each sc of precious round.

Round 9: sl st in next sc, ch 4, dc in same sc and ch 1, twice, dc in same sc. 4 dc scallop made. * Skip 4 sc, dc in next sc and ch 1, three times, dc in same sc. Repeat from * around. Join last dc to 3rd ch of ch-4 first made and break off.
