Easy Homemade Doughnuts

Sometimes I get a craving for doughnuts, however I am not willing to make an early morning run to the grocery store or doughnut shop for them. Making your own doughnuts is very easy, although I have to admit, not at all healthy. However, what doughnut is? These fast doughnuts make a great treat every now and then and the whole family loves them.
Ingredients
A tube or two of buttermilk biscuits, the kind you whack on the counter to open
oil, I use olive oil as it is healthier, but any kind will work
toppings - powdered sugar, cinnamon and sugar, chocolate, chopped nuts, caramel, sprinkles, etc
Directions
Pour oil into a large pan, enough to cover the bottom about a half an inch. Heat on medium. While the oil is heating you need to cut a hole in the middle of each biscuit. I use a corer, however a knife will work as well. Once you have all the biscuits ready and the oil is hot drop the biscuits into the oil. They should fry quickly on the first side and then you can flip them over with tongs. Once the second side is brown remove from oil and drain on paper towels. The biscuits will puff up to look like doughnuts. Do the same for the holes that you cut out.
Once the doughnuts are drained you add the toppings. I dip ours in powdered sugar, because at 7:00 in the morning that is about all I have the energy for. My husband likes to dip his in a cinnamon and sugar mixture. If you are up to it, it is very easy to melt chocolate.
Put 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of butter into a microwave safe dish and heat on high for 30 seconds at a time until melted. Stir well between each heating. When it is almost melted, heat for 10-15 seconds at a time. Once the chocolate is melted you can dip the tops of the doughnuts into the chocolate and then let cool on wax paper. If you want even fancier doughnuts you can put chopped nuts or sprinkles on top right after you dip them and before the chocolate hardens.
As I mentioned before, these doughnuts are not healthy, however they are easy and taste great. My kids all cheered when they came to the table this morning. To them, life couldn't get any better.

I make homemade doughnuts alot...but I have never used biscuits
A plain yeast dough like for egg or raisin bread cut and doughnut shape will work really well too.

Hoodala, great idea on using the oil cap, thanks! I do know that you can make these truly homemade, with your own dough and such, but this is so much faster I haven't tried it that way.

I can't wait to try this. I am going out on friday and buying all the stuff. I am going to make them for my co-workers. We work at a little cafe in Salisbury. They will love them. But then again they love anything bad for them. Hehe!
I assume if you dont cut out hole and make a small batch of frosting you could use a large injecter to put filling in doughnut. Just wondering if this might work.

OMG I was looking for the quickest easiest way to make some homemade donuts and like magic I found one of my fellow hubbers magically had whipped up just the recipe I was looking. I am shutting down and running to the store-to get the biscuits. Before they close and I will be frying some donuts within an hour. Thanks I just tried them with my 3 yr old son and he loved them, especially the holes. I used the top of the salt shaker, but the oil cap is good idea!

Yumm my mother used to make those when i was growing up. She used powdered sugar as a glaze by adding water to it. Wow now I just have to make some homemade doughnuts for breakfast next weekend. I remember my mom used to use the cap from the oil container to make the holes that worked really well.
