Easy Tips to Help Keep Your Family Safe
There are so many things that we do these days to protect our spouse, our children and other family members. It is important to make sure that we do everything we can to make sure that our families are always well-protected and kept safe from any harm. We can't protect our families from everything that happens in the world because there are so many events that are completely out of our control. However, this article gives a few questions that you can ask yourself in order to see if you are doing everything you can to help make sure that your family is safe.
Do your children walk home from school each day or do you pick them up? The type of city and neighborhood that you live in as well as how close you are to your children's school will be some of the factors that help determine the way your children get home from school. If it seems like the walk home is in a fairly safe area and a short easy distance to walk, you might decide to let your children walk home. If you do this, make sure to set some ground rules for your children to obey. Some rules I offer are that your children always take the same route home each day. It is important to not try out new routes because there is a chance that your children could get lost and in an area they shouldn't be in. Also, make sure that your children can walk home with some neighbors. Your children have a much lower chance of being bullied or abducted by strangers if they are in with a group of children. Your children should know not to talk to strangers, but if your children are left alone, it is very scary to think of anyone trying to kidnap them. It is also a good rule to make sure your children know to come directly home and not make any stops off elsewhere unless it is a nearby neighbor's house that you have talked with about. If your work schedule prevents you from being there to pick them up, invest in a carpool system. This is something that can bring a lot of peace of mind and also give you a break and relieve some stress. You won't get in trouble from taking too much time off work if you have a neighbor who agrees to pick your children up at the same time they pick up their own child. Again, these are just a few suggestions for you to think about.
Do your children know what to do if there is an emergency at home? Talk with your children about what an emergency is and when they should call 9-1-1 and also talk about why not to dial 9-1-1. Some people call 9-1-1 when it really isn't an emergency and that makes the lines busier for those calling with real emergencies. Have a set of phone numbers for the police and fire department placed near each phone in the house. You can make these numbers as discreet as you would like as long as you and your family know where to find them when a situation comes up and they can be accessed easily. It is also a good idea to have a family plan for different scenarios. Talk about ways to evacuate your house and where your family will meet at once you are out. You can also have backpacks easily accessible with first aid supplies and food and clothes. In case you need to leave the house quickly, all that you need is already packed for you.
Does your house have the proper smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms? These alarms are crucial to your family's safety. I know many people have one smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm in the house, but depending on how large your house is, you should have multiple alarms in order to fully protect your family. It is very important to have a smoke alarm on every level of your house. Make sure these alarms are also placed near the bedrooms so that you will be able to hear the alarm if a fire breaks out while you are sleeping.
Do you feel like your house is secure at all times? There are many things that you can do to have a safe house. Make sure that all entrances to the house can be locked. It seems like the days of leaving your house unlocked are completely in the past. Maybe there are a few towns out there where you feel good about leaving your front door unlocked, but this is unheard of in other places of our country. Don't leave your doors and windows open. If you have a garage, make sure you keep it closed as much as possible.
Unless you are working out there or bringing cars in and out, it doesn't need to be open. You may even want to invest in getting a home security system. The average price of a home security system varies by different companies to make sure to look around at a few different options. Compare the advantages that a home security system will be bringing to your family and weigh those benefits with the cost. You will find out if a home security system is worth it quite quickly.
It is okay to think about these types of things and it doesn't mean you are a little paranoid. You care deeply for your family and you want the very best for them. Make sure that you are doing everything you can to have a safe house with the proper precautions and set some rules for your children. Don't set out to be superman because you can't protect your family from everything. Things will happen and sometimes it is really unfortunate. Know that you can protect you family from a lot of things by making just a few simple changes to your lifestyle. It will be well worth it.
