Most of us like to garden but do not have time to maintain complicated flower gardens. These are some easy to grow flowers during the summer season in the Midwest.
Foxglove is a beautiful flower that comes in a surprising number of colors. It is a flower that blooms the year after you plant it. If you plant foxglove by seed you must be sure it can get enough sunlight to germinate. It will bloom in the spring or summer after the year you plant it. It is a poisonous flower and it should not be planted in areas small children or pet have access to it. It is a very colorful flower and comes in yellow, red, blue and various shades of purple.
Forget me nots are best known as blue flowers but they come in pink and white as well. They are annuls which means they only bloom once before turning to seed. They do however reseed themselves year after year so they are an easy to maintain addition to your garden. They tend to spread and may need to be trimmed back after several generations but they also are good for hard to cover areas.
Bachelor buttons are a traditional favorite in the Midwest and they come in a variety of colors as well from various shades of blue, pink and white. They are also a self seeding flower that will come back year after year if left to their own devices. They are good for areas that are hard to plant because they get full sun. They will bloom from spring until the first frost of fall.
They need space to spread and can grow as high as three feet. They also can grow to be a foot wide and may need to be thinned out from time to time.
Flowers that reseed themselves provide lots of coverage and are easy to grow can be the less then ambitious gardeners dream. You will not want to do your whole garden in spreading plants but these can be easy to care for additions to almost any garden.
