Vegetarian Burger Recipes

If you’ve decided to become a vegetarian, you might be worried that you’ll never be able to attend a good old-fashioned neighborhood barbecue and enjoy the food again. Luckily, just because you’ve given up meat doesn’t mean that you have to give up a decent burger.

With vegetarian cooking becoming so common nowadays, you can find Boca burgers or other meat substitutes in your local grocery freezer. They come ready to grill and place right on your hamburger bun. While that’s the easy choice, you can dress up these vegetarian burgers a bit more and make your meat-eating friends jealous when they see what you’re eating. Briefly marinate your vegetarian burger in some teriyaki sauce or Worcestershire sauce spiced with some garlic powder and onion powder. After grilling up your burger, melt some cheese over the top of it, and serve it on a bun along with your choice of favorite toppings, including lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles. Or, instead of using a teriyaki or Worcestershire sauce marinade, you can easily make yourself a vegetarian Thai burger. Brush your vegetarian burger with some Thai peanut sauce, which is available at most grocery stores, mixed with a little bit of garlic chili paste. Top your grilled vegetarian burger with some grated carrots, bean sprouts, and chopped onion.

If you don’t want to use a pre-made vegetarian burger from your grocer’s freezer, there are other options for vegetarian burger recipes. For example, grilled Portobello mushrooms are an excellent substitute for meat in a burger. Season your mushrooms with some salt and pepper and grill on a greased grill. Top with some cheese and allow it to melt over the mushroom before transferring to a freshly toasted hamburger bun. An alternative to Portobello mushrooms is to grill sliced eggplant instead.

If you have a little bit more time on your hands, though, you can also create your own vegetarian burger from scratch using these ideas for vegetarian burger recipes. Try making a burger by blending together garbanzo beans, soaked and rinsed, along with some eggs, onion, lemon, cilantro, and garlic. Depending on what flavors you like, you can add a little bit of a cooking sauce of your choice to the mixture—soy sauce, barbecue sauce, or even ketchup. Then, add some breadcrumbs to the mixture and let the whole thing sit long enough to absorb some of the moisture. Gently form the mixture into burger patties and grill just like you would a meat burger and serve topped with your choice of cheese and vegetables.

When you’re making vegetarian burgers no matter what vegetarian burger recipes you decide to use, don’t be afraid to try adding different spices, sauces, or vegetables to the final product to make it taste different each time. Don’t miss out on summer barbecues just because you don’t eat meat. Instead, make yourself a better burger than you could have had before you started eating vegetarian.
