High blood pressure is a serious problem, it can cause strokes, heart disease, heart attacks and kidney failure. If you are being treated for it talk to your doctor before you do anything. If you are in the area that is called pre - hypertension and you want to avoid getting where it's too high, this is for you. If your numbers are 140/90 or higher, you have high blood pressure. If your numbers are 120 to 140 over 80 to 90, you can work to lower it. This will still help you if you are already high, but talk to your doctor first.

Causes of high blood pressure

The national heart association says that 30% of Americans have High blood pressure, and most of them don't even know it. It doesn't show many if any symptoms. There is not any single specific cause for high blood pressure. The main things to avoid to prevent it are. Being overweight, smoking, a high sodium intake, a low potassium intake, family history, stress, and age.


Diets that show signs of lowering blood pressure

There are several diets that have shown to help lower blood pressure. The Dash diet is one that has shown to work in some cases. It has been shown to help regardless of salt, weight, race sex or exercise. It's low fat, lots of fruits and veggies, and not much meat. I feel enough good protein is important so this diet would be hard for most people. Read about it here.

The Mediterranean diet is another one that is similar to the Dash. This diet is also difficult to do, but also has shown to help. This is close to a Vegetarian diet. Most people like to eat meat so it is also not easy to do.

South Beach Diet. This one starts out low carb and then you slowly add them back in as you progress through the plan. You limit carbs in the first phase to 20grams per day. Very hard to do. It is very effective at cutting fat and weight. Some people love it and it works great for them.


Herbs that show promise

There are several herbs that are suppose to help. An amino acid L-Arginine is said to help lower blood pressure. Cayenne is suppose to help. Nitric oxide seems to be the most help. L- Arginine helps your body make nitric oxide. There are several drinks and other mixtures on the market that help your body to produce nitric oxide.

Conclusion

The various diets above all do help in the studies that have been done. Some of the supplements also seem to help. It come down to most other diet and health related issues. You need to eat a healthy diet of plenty of fruit and veggies. The proper amount of good fats. Lean meat is also important to make sure you get enough protein in your diet. You just need to eat healthy, get enough exercise, and don't let yourself become obese.
