Eating Disorders - Bulimia Is As Dangerous As Anorexia

Yes, we all have heard of anorexia and it is now the most commonly recognized of all eating disorders by the medical community. But for those that suffer from the eating disorder known as Bulimia it is important that they same emphasis is placed on treating it as anorexia. For many eating disorders, bulimia included their are many health problems associated with them.

In a very few cases those suffering from bulimia (known as bulimics) will restrict their food intake. Rather in the majority of cases where a person is diagnosed as suffering from this eating disorder what they prefer to do is actually try to remove the food that they have consumed.

Therefore, a bulimic person will rather than consume small amounts of food they will usually eat large amounts through binge eating. Then after consuming this food will then attempt to get rid of it either through self-induced vomiting or through taking laxatives to purge their system.

However the biggest problem that will be faced both by medical professionals and close family and friends of a sufferer of bulimia is actually spotting they have the disorder in the first place. In many cases those that suffer from this eating disorder will have little or no problem with their weight, in fact in a large of number of cases their weight will be more than what is considered normal for their body size.

As with all eating disorders each one can cause seriously health problems to the sufferer. With bulimia those that choose to remove the food they have eaten through self-induced vomiting are placing considerable amounts of strain on to their heart and other major organs within the body.

The other major problem with self-induced vomiting and the taking of laxatives to purge the body of these foods is that the person is not getting sufficient amounts of nutrients into it. It is these nutrients which actually help with the body to function properly especially in relation to all major organs and other systems within the body. If a person is for bulimic for any length of time this can turn into a life threatening situation.

As with all forms of eating disorders as well as trying to get the sufferer to eat a much more healthy diet, underlying psychological problems will need to be treated as well. The problem is that for those people who are diagnosed with suffering from anorexia nervosa are also at a greater risk of developing bulimia as well. So through the treatment of the psychological problems associated with these disorders can often help to prevent the conditions from becoming far worse.

Although someone you may know may have suffered from bulimia at some stage of their life, just because they seem to be eating properly now does not mean that they are suffering any more. In fact this is often the complete opposite and it is only once they have faced up to the fact that they are suffering from eating disorders, bulimia included can they then ask for help to treat it.

Very interesting. Bulimia is one of the most difficult disorders to spot and to admit. One can go for years living with this without anyone noticing.
