Eating Habits You Will Want to Avoid

I, like most people have had to curb some of my eating habits in order to lose weight. When I was young before bed I would often eat some chocolate, a piece of cake or have some cookies as a late night snack. Often when my mother held a dinner party at our house I would stay up to eat some of the leftovers from the party. This usually consisted of cheeses, “devilled” eggs, fried chicken, all types of bread, and my favorite -- sour cream pound cake and vanilla ice cream!

So you can see why, even now, it’s hard for me to stay on a diet. This is also why I’ve made it my mission to learn as many of my mother’s recipes as possible to try and capture the forbidden foods of my youth. But I do try to follow a diet. At least attempting to follow a diet makes me feel better and is probably better for my body and health.

Your own problem may be much different from mine, but I thought you might benefit from knowing what I’ve been up against.

As a kid I do remember a time when we did not have a lot. Being a kid I was unaware of our financial situation. Like many other kids I thought that our home life was normal. So having no food in the fridge was what I thought was common for most people. As I got older our economic situation improved tremendously. My parents where very young (18 and 19) when they started their family. But both achieve college degrees and as they prospered our fridge filled up.

The problem is that I unconsciously developed a feeling of constant “lacking”. Some people who go through periods of hunger (we where never hungry; just never an over abundance of food) or poverty they grow up to see abundance everywhere. I grew up the opposite. I did not see abundance. This caused me to eat obsessively. Overeating made me feel better, and I assured myself that I would not be hungry. I was driven by fear. As a result I thought about food as a possession to be stored like a squirrel stores nuts.

However eating a lot of unnecessary calories in order to convince yourself that you’re safe and comfortable isn’t going to help things at all. Do some type of useful activity instead, and you will feel a lot better about yourself. Remember the food that you eat today isn’t going to help your fear in any way.

Here’s a couple of things you should do to help with your diet or weight loss program:

1. Avoid eating late at night. This is a habit I developed as a kid and it’s been nothing but trouble ever since. To avoid the late night snacks develop a meal plan that will allow you to eat 4 - 6 meals each day. The important point here is to “Schedule” a healthy late night snack.

2. Figure out if there are any past issues or emotional reasons that are causing you to over eat. If so deal with them head on. By acknowledging your issues and dealing with them you will be able to stop yourself from overeating.
