Eating out in Gibraltar
78Gibraltar - A Quite Amazing Place
For the last eighteen months I have lived in the South of Spain and worked in Gibraltar and I have to say for such a small placeĀ - 6.8 Sq KM it is surprisingly diverse!
The population of Gibraltar is approx. 30,000 and is made up predominantly of native Gibraltarians - who are I have to say lovely people, English and a range of other Nationalities including North African (not surprising considering how close Morocco is across the Straits)
Now with such a diverse range of cultures and tastes there comes diverse range of restaurants and bars - ranging from the places aimed at Tourists (Fish and Chips and Pub Grub) - some very good I hasten to add! to World Class steak and fish restaurants - with pretty much everything in between.
Places for Tourists - Casemates Square / Main Street
The first place most tourists arrive when they get to Gibraltar is Casemates Square which is situated at the bottom end of Main Street. There are restaurants and bars on pretty much all four sides of the square and here are the choices:
Fast Food - Burger King!!, Pizza Hut & TelePizza
Sandwiches - Solo Express - One of (if not the best) sandwich place in Gibraltar
Fish & Chips - Whilst there are many choices - there is only ONE choice in my mind and thats Roy's Fish and Chips - it may not be Harry Ramsdens but the fish and chips is fantastic as are the mushy peas!!! - and more often than not the man himself is on duty at the fryer!!!
Pub Grub - The Lord Nelson do some good quality food and also a good pint as well! as do Allswell - although dont go to Allswell at night as it gets a bit hectic! I would also recommend the Gibraltar Arms on Main Street (quite a way up near Latino's Diner) and the Gibraltar Arms also do an awesome full english breakfast!!!
Restaurants - Latino's Diner on Main Street has a great range of American Diner style food and their sister restaurant on Casemates - which is a full sit down restaurant with outside tables does an excellent steak and many other dishes

Quality Restaurants
Gibraltar has a great number of better restaurants some of which most definately rival the best Spain can offer and here is a recommended selection of them.
The Waterfront - located down in Queensway Quay this restaurant has a very wide and good quality menu, food is good qulaity and fantastic value and its location is stunning!
Thyme - located at the back of Main Street and possibly my favourite restaurant in Gibraltar - their signature dish is their 'Seafood Slammer' where you get a number of different shot glasses all with different 'bits'! of seafood in them - Now I am not a fish or seafood lover so I have never tried it but people I have dined with rave about it - you really do have to see it to believe it - but their other dishes are equally as good - the spring roll starter and steak main are to die for!
Gauchos - Steak is a big speciality in this part of the world and Gauchos rivals Patagonia across the border in La Linea (Spain) for the quality of their steak. As asteak lover I am in heaven when I eat here and all I can say is you really do have to experience it - believe me you will not be disapointed!
The Casino - I have not ate there yet but I believe the restaurant at the new Casino in Marina Bay is very very good and comes highly recommended.
Cafe Rojo - Located in Irish Town this restaurant specialises in Italian and the food is fantastic quality and very good value - definately worth going at lunch time as well - it is a good place to spend a few hours!!
Pizzaghetti - Sister restaurant of Cafe Rojo and located next door - they serve as the name suggests pizza - and it is very very good! - best of all at lunchtime pizzas are half priceĀ - unfortunately a bit too tempting and I have sampled on more than one occasion!

Cafe Rojo is in a league of its own. Owners Annette & Luis work hard to ensure quality food & service. I noticed a comment about it being a sister Restaurantto Pizzaghetti, this i have to inform you is totally incorrect, there is no sister Restauant to Cafe Rojo. Located in Irish Town although a little hidden its certainly worth the hunt.
