Being Overweight

In case you haven't heard, The United States is the number one country in the world that faces a tremendous problem with its population, and, it's battle with obesity.

There is so much information on the topic that people who are struggling with the battle of the bulge (myself included) just get caught up in both fact and fiction of the matter.

From pills that claim to make you lose that siamese twin you've been carrying half your life, to nutritional drinks in a can, (that are really just a glorified remedy to starving yourself, but provide vitamins in the interim) or the next fad diet that's out there that helped your Aunt Suzie's, daughters', grandmas' friend - it's becoming harder and harder to determine what's real, what works, and what to do.

For most people who are overweight, it's a challenge in itself to come to terms with the fact that they need to lose the weight. Many times, when all options become exhasted, people will do their best to go back to basics. That typically invovles a visit to their Primary Doctor. It has been my experience, however, that it's not always the wisest choice.

For example, many medical professionals will suggest someone who is severly overweight to go on a drastically reduced calorie diet. Most people in that situation end up giving up because their starving all the time, and they feel like their not even eating the food they like. After all, who wants to go from eating a double cheeseburger and fries to a small bowl of soup and salad?

So what's the answer to all of this? How do we eat right? What do we do?

I have listed here a few tips that have, and, are continuing to help me with the battle of the bulge, and all that's required of you is some time & investment in your overall health & well-being to be able to accomplish the ultimate goal of learning how to eat right for years to come.

MAKE A COMMITMENT TO YOURSELF.

-Just changing your attitude towards adapting a new eating regimin & habbits can help you tremendously. The mind is a powerful thing. If you make a commitment to living a healthier lifestyle, and changing your eating habbits then it's something that will stick. Make sure that you understand your reasons for making the commitment. Everyone would love to look like that 'after' picture, but don't make that your main goal. Your key focus should be on your overall health and the steps you are taking to preserve that.

BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU'RE EATING & WHAT'S IN IT

-Stick to foods that are either unprocessed, or have very minimal additives to them. Whole foods are the wisest of choices such as lean meats, fruits, & vegtables. Not everyone likes whole foods, but if you do enough research you can find some good recipes for these types of food that not only taste good, but are good for you.

-Also, another craze that has been out there, more so recently, is the 'no trans fat' craze. Yes, it is true that transfat is bad for you, however, just because a particular food doesn't contain any, doesn't make it a 'healthy' food choice. Look at the other ingrediants that make up that item, I'm sure you'll find much more that could be just as bad for you.

PORTION CONTROL

-It is important to retrain your body how to eat in smaller doses, keeping yourself satisfied throughout the day. Don't go more than three hours without eating. Develope a food plan that is reasonable for you and will keep you satisfied throughout the day.

SUPPORT

-Join a support group that will help you implement your goals, while keeping you motivated living a healthier lifestyle. If you don't want to join one, you may have friends & family who can provide you with a listening ear, and sometimes offer helpful suggestions or compliments that could do a world of wonders for your self-esteem.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST.....

-Be patient with yourself. All good things come to those who wait.

-The key is - persistance, dillegance, and above all, the desire for a healthier lifestyle. Keeping those in mind will help you tremendously.

You are so right about the preservatives and additives in food. If you will stick to an all natural diet, that does not contain those two things, you will see the weight drop off, sometimes faster than you need for it to. If you start to lose weight too quickly, add more whole grain breads, beans and nuts to your diet. The first sign is leg cramps that let you know to slow down on the weight loss.

I totally agree with what you have written. All it needs is self discipline. I am one of those people whose struggling to loose wirght before but when I started to have a commitment and be concious of what I eat, I successfully lost weight without the help of any dietry pills or any unhealthy diet programs.

great article. It all starts with determination, and be aware of what you eat at the right amount.
