Eazy E Part 2
751986
Eazy E founds Ruthless Records with his friend Jerry Heller. They would oversee everything, and form a union with a couple guys who really admired their entrepenueristic chutzpah, and that was Ice Cube and Dr. Dre of Death Row Records.
Ice Cube and Dr. Dre had just made it big off a single called "Boys N The Hood". They talked alot, hung out, and decide to join forces. With the edition of DJ Yella and MC Ren (author of the beautiful "Just Don't Bite It" later on) they would form a group called N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). Eazy-E's "Eazy Duz It" had the duo benefit of being banned from radio stations as well as complained about loudly by mouthy politicians, and they would be big overnight.
"Take out the security guard/with a slap of my hand/yeah he's wearing a badge but he's a/old ass man"
But as good as Eazy Duz It was, it was nothing compared to his contribution to their first major collaberative effort...
"Straight Outta Compton" was a lyrical graphic novel. Superbly executed in every way. In the title song, Eazy makes sure we know that after he makes our sister think he loves her, he's going to do something bad and then make bail. In F the police, pretty much the same. In Gangsta Gangsta, he expresses how much he'd like to F the girls who want to F him. In Parental Discretion iz Advised...we might just not be able to deal with the size. In 8-Ball, we learned that he enjoys a form of cocaine with his malt liquor as he drives drunk and girls give him kisses on the cheek. For the kids, it was one to grow on. In Dopeman he lets us know, yeah, he IS the Dopeman. And if Strawberry wants a hit, she needs to "get her knees dirty".
1991
It hits me, right in the middle of gym class one day in the eighth grade as my mind wanders...PRECISELY what "get her knees dirty" means! And WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1992
And then...out comes a bunch of okay stuff until "The Predator" by Ice Cube, which is a highly suitable number 2.
But before that, things got very interesting.
Around 1991, the band breaks up. There was not much left to talk about. It was Yella, Eazy-E, and that was it. M.C. Ren was loyal to both, Ice Cube wanted to do his own thing and wanted no part in any stupid rifts, and Dr. Dre...he multipled the rift.
Dr. Dre, to sort through all Death Row's finances in the midst of their awkward fued with Ruthless, hires a slew of people to go up against Eazy in the ways of the financial and the lyrical. This is how Suge Knight, Calvin Brodus (Snoop Dogg), and soon the Jewish Defense League would end up in the picture.
Suge Knight is an example of what can happen when you're quick to try to show somebody up. Obey the Michael Jordan commercial and have patience. It doesn't matter if people don't know what you are yet, what's important is that you know you're going to get there. Dr. Dre was and remains one of the best talent scouts in the world. This is how one explains the glory of Eminem. Yet Dre was looking for an army. Eazy E had an army. You better believe Eazy had an army.
Suge Knight and the JDL managed to essentially bully people into funding Dr. Dre's albums, and then set Death Row up with legitimate recording corporations and bully them to give Dre a percentage on every single album he ends up so much as having a credit on the cover of. But Suge Knight in exchange...expected Dr. Dre to give him half of all his stuff.
And so the fued got from stupid to heartbreaking maddening. First they lobbied assaults over song lyrics. "If it's on Motha-effer then it's on G" and "getting raped by your producer".
Then...Eazy-E died of AIDS.
Notice how I just killed off the star of our series just like that but there's clearly more story left? That's because this began the legendary EAST COAST/WEST COAST fued.
You see, before Eazy-E died, he was all set to do a comeback album with Notorious B.I.G. and others. After which....things that Biggie had to say about Eazy-E's old friends really struck a chord with Eazy's old friends. And so a rivalry that would essentially pit Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, Snoop and Tupac Shakur on one side....and Biggie Smalls and his producer Puff Daddy (now P.Diddy) on the other.
Still to this day, nobody knows who shot either Tupac or Biggie. They can't pin a side. Why? Because whoever had been paid to kill either one...killed the other one as well to cover their tracks.

I thought so too. Particularly the climax when Ice Cube's trying to do a revenge killing for his shot brother, the whole time thinking for the first time how is mom might have a point about she hates him. You ever see Menace II Society? I wish I had made Menace.
