Finger Stretcher for the Aspiring Pianist

Uh.... Ok, if anyone plays piano out there, don’t get any ideas. This could probably result in you never playing again.

This little device, which is even too painful to look at was created in the 1900’ s. This alarming Victorian finger stretcher was designed to stretch the hands of aspiring pianists and guitarists.

According to one source, Robert Schumann permanently wrecked his right hand and ended his career using an early version of one of these contraptions.

To be honest I’d rather be the worst player in the world than stick my fingers into one of those!

The Earliest GPS

Fancy taking a drive with one of these babies telling you where to go?

That would be "The Plus Four Wristlet Route Indicator" from 1927... Not only it's the earliest navigation wrist gadget, but it's also wind-up ! Something your 5-year old would love.

Insert an interchangeable map into this route indicator and never get lost - even if the whole nav-sat system goes down. Worn like a wrist-watch, it is loaded with a tiny paper road map that is rolled across the face by adjusting two small black knobs.

My goodness, nineteenth century gadgets are completely barmy – I guess nothing’s changed...

The Window Climbing Robot "Brainizord"

There seems to be no other reason for this machine's existence, other than a simple pleasure of watching it climb up your window. It will also flash and blink their lights for you, imagine that.

I think I’ll use it to keep my 9 month old daughter busy. She loves to watch moving things. And I think the flashing lights will be a nice touch...

Worried about a fish bladder not being properly inflated?

Fish Bladder is encased in glass and inflated by applying force to the handles. Why? I am not sure I want to know.

I am going to put myself on the line here and say that this is unequivocally the most bizarre item that I have ever come across.

Very little information is available about this absurd device except to say that it costs 120,000 Yen and that the product description is given on the site as follows (and I quote):

“Fish bladder incased in glass container. Control air pressure in the container by operating the cylinder pump to move the fish bladder.”

Lettuce Safety Deposit Box? Huh?

Hiding your valuables inside the head of iceberg lettuce seems like a great idea (unless the burglar happens to be very hungry and vegetarian).

But, I suppose anything will do if it means keeping my grandmothers pearls safe.

Paper LP

Fully working, manual record player made entirely of paper?

Yep, you better believe it!

To play the record the handle needs to be turned in a clockwise direction at a steady 331/3rpm. The paper cone then acts as a pickup, amplifying the sound enough to make it audible.

Well if only we’d known that before we went and bought the damn record player...
