It's a little-recognized fact that children learn by engaging in experiences that mean something to them, and that play is one of the better ways to do this. After all, no matter how useful the information is, no one will learning unless they find it interesting and meaningful in their own life.

Children learn a lot of their information through play, and they do it quickly and with more pleasure than they do in a formal setting. In fact, getting into formal teaching too early can actually make children frustrated and feel like learning isn't worthwhile. Fortunately, educational kids' toys and games make learning while having fun a lot easier.

Using all five senses, children can learn in many different ways. They can explore and move actual objects, and get a concrete understanding of concepts they're going to use later on in life. Very young children learn more effectively when their toys are different colors, sizes, shapes and textures, and when their imaginations are fully engaged.

One area that develops very quickly when used in play situations is language. Children develop their internal word bank more effectively when they're exposed to more new things, often inventing new words to describe things they've never encountered before. Doing this in a playful way, by helping your child encounter something new, is a lot more effective than just teaching lists.

There are even several different types of play that most kids get involved in, and several different types of educational toys that can help make this more effective. Functional play is where children use repetitive motions and develop muscles, such as running, walking, jumping or hammering. Dramatic play is where children build things out of objects, like blocks or wood. Socio-dramatic play is a type of make believe, where children role-play and use their imagination, and constructive play is made up of kids educational games with rules (often determined by the children).

Most very young children start out by exploring the world. They gesture, touch, smell, and taste to learn about the world around them, and they imitate adult body language and facial expressions. Talking to children of this age constantly and providing them with stimulating toys can be an educational experience all its own.

Older children - around three to five years - start roleplaying and playing pretend, forming scenarios and pretending to be other people. They start creating the scripts they'll use throughout their lives. That's why it's so important to expose them to new things, take them to new places, and help them meet other people to teach them the right way to behave and get them learning some of the basics of later education.

There are great ways to introduce simple math concepts and reading concepts without turning the session into boring "school time". The tradition of reading to your children on a daily basis can help them understand how stories work and get interested in books and images. Use basic mathematical language while you play with your children, talking about size and shape, counting objects, and showing them how to add and remove objects.
