Vertical jump or vertical leap is vital to almost all athletes regardless of the sport they are in. It requires strength speed and flexibility to be developed. One of the most common question in the sports world is "How can I increase my vertical leap?".

Athletes who are into sports that require great jumping ability have to take on speed training, proper conditioning, sport specific skill training and other exercises in the weight room. Lifting weights can unquestionably help in the improvement of a person's vertical jump.

The most common sports in which a person's vertical jump is critical are basketball, volleyball, football, and track and field.

The legs and the hips are the most important body parts in making jumps, but researchers found out in studies that by swinging your arms, the velocity of your jump can be increased as much as 15%.

Here are some effective exercises to increase your vertical leap.

Squats Rest a barbell in the upper portion of your back. Your feet must be shoulder width apart. Bend knees and slowly lower hips until thighs are parallel to the floor. Upon reaching the bottom position, press the weight up back to the starting position.

Step ups Stand in an upright position while holding two dumbbells. Step up to a bench or box with a height that would put your knee at a 90-degree angle. Perform 10 repetitions per leg.

Lunges Stand in an upright position while holding two dumbbells. Step as far forward as possible and bend forward knee until it makes a 90-degree angle. Perform 10 repetitions per leg.

Weighted Box Jumps Hold light dumbbells and stand in front of a box or bench with a height of 16 to 32 inches. Jump as high as possible and land softly in the box or bench. Step down and perform 3 sets of 10 jumps.
