Electric Shaver or Razor Blade?
When choosing a shaver the decision is usually wet or dry. Can an electric shaver perform just as well or if not better than a manual blade? Today’s current crop of electric shaver produces results that give razors a run for their money. Razors have a tendency to cut the skin surface. Electric shavers use can result in a skin rash but after constant use the skin will become less irritated as time goes by. Though there is a higher initial purchase price for an electric shaver, you won’t have that weekly/fortnightly purchase of replacement blades for manual razors.
Electric shavers are even made waterproof these days so they can be used in the shower without the fear of damaging any internal electric parts. Braun and Philips both sell electric shavers that are waterproof. Some people consider a wet shave in the shower superior to a dry shave. Others just prefer the time saving feature where they can have a shave and shower at the same time.
The top performing models come in two types, rotary or foil. Rotary electric shavers have between two and three circular cutting blades which can independently mold and hug the facial features. Foil models present as a rectangular bar which has a foil metal covering which allows the hairs to slide into the gaps and a cutter block underneath the foil cuts away at the whiskers of hair. Braun sells the foil type whilst Philips sells the rotary.
In reviews of electric shavers, the best electric shaver tends to be able to handle around the neck area in quicker time and with less skin irritation. Around the Adam’s apple is a particular spot where foil electric shavers can shave with less chance of cutting into the skin.
Most Braun and Philips electric shavers come with a trimmer attachment. This handy feature allows people with Moustaches or Beards to trim around the edges with ease. Just be careful with some model as the physical location of the trimmer when it pops out of the shaver body makes it difficult to see where you are shaving in the mirror. This usually occurs when the trimmer part is too short and doesn’t sit proud of the main body, so when shaving in the mirror the main body of the shave blocks the view of where you are trying to trim.
When it comes time to reviewing electric shavers, which one do you buy? There are a lot of models on the market. Generally you will find that Braun and Philips produce several different versions of a main model. Philips electric shaver models 7390, 7380 and 7320 are fairly similar. Their main different lies in whether one has an LCD screen or one model may show a readout of the time remaining before recharging. The actual shaving head doesn’t usually change. So take that into consideration when reviewing or buying a shaver. The more expensive models have all the latest readouts and pretty lights etc on the front, but you can save yourself money by getting the plan simple non digital display models.
To extend your electric shavers life, remember to take care of it. Washing and cleaning out the shaving head regularly helps, so does lubricating. Some models even come with their own cleaning station and special cleaning solution liquid. Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to purchase their branded cleaning solution. Customer feedback suggests that substitution with cleaning/rubbing alcohol can have the same end result at a fraction of the cost.

I've tried a rotary shaver a few times over the years, and have always wanted it to be the best shave I could get - unfortunately it has never lived up to expectations and I always go back to a wet shave. Nice article though.
