Electric treadmills have been one of the favorite fitness gizmos by enthusiasts and by those who want to belt out those fats from the body for a firmer and toner figure. Even if these carry a higher price tag over the manual treadmill, the features and numerous functionalities that go with them makes them worth the price. If you are looking for an electric treadmill to buy and does not have any tinge of hint on what type or brand or the best treadmill to look for, then this article might give you a bit of help as you read on.

Treadmill Motor

Electrical treadmills by default are powered by an electric motor, of course. This motor is the powerhouse of the entire treadmill assembly and will be the one who will do most of the work. As such, it should be something which has a higher reliability and performance rating especially if your routine involves prolonged and continuous usage. Power ratings of the motor are usually measured in HP or horsepower. If you are the only one who will be using the treadmill then you may be fine with a horsepower rating of 1hp. However if you are the type who kicks in longer distances, then you may be well-off with higher power ratings such as 2hp or more especially if you are going to share it with multiple serious users.

Treadmill Belt

The belt of an electric treadmill is the one which comes in constant contact with your jogging or running shoes. And it is by far the surface which you must be comfortable in jogging or running onto. So it is of importance to duly consider its durability, length as well as its width.

Every impact your whole weight puts on the belt while jogging on it is considered a heavy load. Thus, it should be of high importance that the belt should be made up of durable materials. Opt for belts which are at least 2-ply or more especially if you or other users are of heavy build.

The length of the belt should also be taken into consideration. If you are a tall person or the one with longer legs, for sure, the locomotive range of your legs would require a longer belt platform to be able to achieve a comfortable jogging or running rhythm. A belt length of about at least 4 feet would suffice an average height individual. For taller individuals, slightly longer treadmill belts such as 4.5 ft or longer would normally suffice.

Every individual has their own unique way of swinging their arms and lower limbs while jogging or running. So it should be wise to factor in the width of the treadmill belt. Of course, the wider the belt, the better as it could accommodate in comfort a wide range of individual types.

Basic Features And Safety Features

Depending on the brand and model, there would be a wide variety of features which can be available for a particular treadmill. However, the basic features usually include the ability of the platform to be inclined at various angles and buttons which can vary the motor speed. The visual meters normally would show the distance, time and speed. Expensive models normally tend to have more features added onto the instrument panel of the machine. Most electric treadmills are capable to be folded for easy storage when not in use.

The hand rails are one of the important parts of the treadmill and is also considered a safety feature. Sometimes when you get off balance by some reason or another, the immediate upper limb reflex would be to grab on something to hold on without considering if it would hold your weight or not. Yes, that could happen to some individuals. As such, strong handrails within easy reach should be taken a look at. It should be positioned in such a manner where the user should have easy reach and grip on it.

Another safety feature which should not be overlooked in an electric treadmill is the emergency stop button, child-proof switch and safety key. The safety key is a key with a lanyard attached to your wrist. Should you happen to fall or lose balance, the safety key would then be dislodged from the treadmill making it stop in an instant. In treadmill models with a safety key feature, the machine will not start if the safety key is not inserted into its slot. The emergency stop button is one big button strategically positioned at the front control panel. It comes handy when your legs and stamina can’t handle it anymore. What you would just do is to push that button to make the belt stop moving in an instant. The child-proof switch is one useful feature also. Should an unsupervised tot or toddler in your household happen to satisfy his or her curiosity by tinkering with the control panel, he or she could not get it to run if the child-proof switch is active.

After-Sales Support And Service

An electrical treadmill may carry a higher price tag as compared to a manual treadmill, hence, it should be considered a serious investment. As such, one should take into consideration the warranty that goes with the sale of the unit. Longer warranty periods usually means that the manufacturer is pretty sure of the durability of their product. However, you should also consider the reliability of the after sales-support and service of the vendor or the manufacturer. Go with the vendors which have a proven track record when it comes to support.
