Electrical Grounding
76Electrical Grounding is a preventive measure to assure that
all metal parts of a circuit or wiring if properly grounded or is connected
directly to the earth. It is now essential that all 120- and 240-volt circuits
have proper grounding.
What is the function of electrical grounding and why is it important?
Well, electrical grounding does nothing during normal operation, but in case of
any malfunction, it protects you from electric shock or even fire.
Electric shocks and fire can occur at places where there is electricity and
conductive material. Proper electrical grounding routes any unwanted electric
charge to the earth thus preventing electric shocks and fire.

How to do electrical grounding
How electrical grounding will be done depends on the wiring method of your
home. If you have used metal enclosure to run wire, the enclosure itself can
act as the grounding path. If you have used nonmetallic sheathed cable (NM), you
must run a separate grounding wire with the circuit wires.
Whatever grounding method you adopt, the motive and the end result is the same. It provides a path for unwanted or fault current leading to the neutral bus bar in the service entrance panel, which is grounded through the grounding electrode conductor.
The electrical code requires that all receptacles in kitchen, bathrooms, garages or any other potentially damp location where there risk of shock be protected by a GFCI.
