LA Times Lies About Electronic Cigarettes

I recently read an electronic cigarette reviews regarding e-cig safety concerning chemicals contained in electronic cigarettes. I was reading an article from the Los Angeles Times "FDA: Electronic cigarettes are a no-no", citing that in countries like Australia, electronic cigarettes have been banned saying that they don't know the heath effects associated with electronic cigarettes.

Of the several manufactures of electronic cigarettes they tested two; Smoking Everywhere and Njoy e-cigs for chemicals and found but 2 toxins not including nicotine contained in e-cigs. Those two chemicals are: diethylene glycol and nitrosamines.

Of those two chemicals, nitrosamine is one of the same carcinogens found in tobacco cigarettes. Had the LA Times been a non-partisan reporter they might have included that nitrosamines is a protein found in beer, fish, red meats and cheese etc.. it is the same carcinogen that has to be ingested to become active. Meaning nitrosamines react to highly acidic conditions like those produced in the stomach before they can cause cancer. The primary cancer caused by nitrosamines is of course colon cancer and the amount of nitrosaminies is regulated by the FDA to decreases a persons chances of getting cancer.

Diethylene glycol is an organic compound found in alcohols and ethers and is not the same chemicals that the LA Times claims is used in anti-freeze. The two are derived fromethylene oxide but serve two different functions. Ethylene glycol is the chemical contained in automobile coolants such as anti-freeze where as Diethylene glycol is a chemicals that attracts water molecules from the environment and converts to carbon dioxide and water.

If that sounds too dangerous to you then you may also want to check out the chemicals contained in decaffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee contains formaldehyde which can also be described as ethylene glycol a substance used in tobacco and decaffeinated coffee. So it stands to show you that the FDA is not so concerned with the two chemicals found in the electronic cigarettes.

True: Electronic cigarettes are not to be promoted as a "quit smoking device", how much sense would that make? The real concern is that the product is being targeted by third party or "non associated" sellers identifying the product as a "quit smoking" device when it is a device the the President of Electronic Cigarettes made perfectly clear that the product demograph is aimed at folks who have been long term smokers to get off tobacco. Check out the video Smoking Everywhere Electric Cigarette Review Are They Safe?

What's in a tobacco cigarette?

Now, let's take a look at what is in a tobacco cigarette. Yes, you would have come across one very misleading statement made by the LA Times about the use of diethylene glycol which is not the same as the chemicals used in tobacco and decaffeinated coffee which is ethylene glycol.

If you aren't scratching your head as to why the FDA is even involved, only two things stand out. First (as stated in the article from the LA Times) it was suggested that the FDA regulate electronic cigarettes for healthy and safety of the manufacturing plants itself. Just as the department of health and safety will come into your restaurant and make sure the restaurant is clean and safe for it's workers and customers, the same applies here and 2nd of course they want a piece of the pie.

I don't really care if the FDA does regulate the production of electronic cigarettes however my fear, which is my fear for all long term smokers like myself is that they will make you get an Rx for it or increase the cost so much so that most smokers will likely just switch back to tobacco smoke.

The electronic cigarette is a god sent for billions of smokers and non smokers because it is the "safer" alternative to tobacco. The article from the LA Times did make a completely ignorant statement toward smokers and oral fixations which I think was a disgusting and blatantly ***ked up statement,

"Stop-smoking experts say the devices are not useful for ending cigarette addiction because they do nothing to interrupt the hand-to-mouth behavior that is an integral part of the habit."

Had that statement actually come from a "stop smoking" expert the statement never would have been made because oral fixation is a habit that starts in childhood and is compensated through the actions of moving thing to and from your mouth which is why a "real quit smoking excerpt" suggest snaking on carrots, nicotine gum, gum and in this case electronic cigarettes. But since the device is not marketed as a stop smoking device, it makes it a bit of a challenge to keep the product out of government hands. Oh and you can purchase electronic cigarette cartridges without nicotine!

So the world of non-smokers who have something up their butts wants to make a stink about something that they have never had to deal with by making up outlandish statements and slandering smokers everywhere by making us look like we are killers of ourselves and other while continuing to make strides to get them to shut the hell up, then I would think at some point smokers everywhere can also make a case against Non-Smoking Parties intentionally demeaning and belittling smokers for making it look as though smokers intentionally promote cigarettes to children when the parents should just do a better job of letting their own children know the effects of tobacco.

I am fed up with anti-smoking groups giving smokers dirty looks, segregation and just the over all criminal feeling you get from some anit-smoking nazi who gives you the dirty eye for smoking as if you are some lesser human being.

It isn't enough that smokers have peaceful said, "Okay, I see your concern with smoking inside so I will take it outside." We did this, it sucked but we did. Then you tell us that we cannot smoke 20 ft. near a building. So we moved our asses out into the street. Then you tell us that we cannot smoke in any public area even if it is well ventilated and we did that too. Next we cannot smoke at a bus stop. The price of cigarettes gets jacked up, you make the only other proven "quit smoking" device only available through a doctor and in some cases deny smokers jobs.

So shut the hell up if you don't like the idea of electronic cigarettes and get a life! As for smokers out there who are still concerned with the safety of electronic cigarettes containing Diethylene glycol you can try ecighawaii.com Amazon store for electronic cigarettes that do not contain DEG.

Extremism and hate are undesirable and it's not a pretty site to see non-smokers who are fanatical. "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" Winston Churchill. I have to say there are plenty of angles to this though and sometimes freedom is a case of not limiting the freedom of others too so personally, I think going out to smoke is a fair call because it means smokers and non-smokers are both less limited.

I think the same thing psychicdog (I think? I think you meant "sight" instead of "site"). I think that smokers have and continue to do the best we can to respect those around us. I am very conscious about those around me when I do smoke so sometimes I wish that when I am somewhere smoking (where it is allowed) that they would stop with the dirty looks or overly dramatic theater acts when they are in my very small and regulated territory.

I never say anything because I know it is not worth the effort to address stuff like that but I do wish they could at least acknowledge and show at least some respect for staying out of their way so they can stay out of mine.

Sandra I as a smoker realize that I am the equivalent of a social leper . And the other day I was outside near nobody having a smoke, some woman came by and gave me a glare and told me she was allergic to smoke. I told her I was allergic to self righteousness . I got the last laugh on that one . But thank you for the chemical analysis on the ecigs which I know little about and meat and anti freeze and all of It . I learned something .

And lastly the only thing the LA Times Is good for Is wrapping fish . There Is not a day that goes by that I do not wonder how these guys are employed with their brand of yellow journalism . Have a nice weekend

You forgot to mention that smokers will soon be turned away from medical care or treatment, which I personally find absolutely ludicrous and repugnant when you consider all of the additional tax dollars we pay - and governments use to build hospitals and provide medical care.

just a pointer.. "heath" is "health" ;)

Great review, thanks for splitting it down the middle.

Just remember kids--if the FDA doesn't get to tax it, it's bad.

If you put things into context - the government regulated and allowed the distribution and sale of tobacco along with collection of taxes on those sales.

Now we, unwittingly addicted to a legal product sanctioned by the "government" and regulatory commissions, are being punished for consuming their approved product.

Talk about irony and hypocrisy.

@Ixxy, darn it! Now I have to go back and look for the stupid spelling typo. lol- You ever consider making bumper stickers for a living? Loved the new line!

@HILLceo, I hear ya! Seriously, just waiting for smokers to finally have enough of their shenanigans.

Thanks for sharing this information Sandra. As I said in my own hub, discontinuing nicotine entirely is the best choice to make, but electronic cigarettes provide a viable alternative to help pull a person away from some of the larger dangers of regular cigarettes.

If many of us had the choice of losing all ten fingers or possibly one thumb, I think we would all chose the possibility of one thumb, as it makes sense. Unfortunately, some people won't be happy until all nicotine is banned.

The funniest thing is ... electronic cigarettes produce no emissions that are toxic to others, so I would think non-smokers would be embracing the switchover.

We just ignore the Health Advisory :"Smoking Kills". The source of these commercialized cigarettes, tobacco plant is a medicinal plant. Only the additives make the cigarettes dangerous to our health. The government of every country ignore those ill-effects because of the high revenue they will get from its taxes, not to mention the anomalies happening in the tobacco industry (bribes) just to keep it in existence, including the new e-cigarette industry.

Good hub, Sandra. Both my sister and I are smokers, and I'm trying the e-cigarettes both for health reasons and for reasons of expense. THEY DON'T PRODUCE ANY SECOND HAND SMOKE TO BOTHER NON-SMOKERS! They don't have the health risk of emphysema associated with them, or the tar and so-forth that pollutes the lungs of a smoker. I think they're great! My sister, who has a two-hour bus ride commute to work each way, started smoking the e-cigarettes I gave her on the bus. Everyone is fascinated. It looks like smoke (the electronic cigarette heats nicotine with water vapor as a delivery system, and water vapor is exhaled); but it doesn't have any odor and dissipates immediately. The batery and nicotine charge are designed to look and feel like a cigarette.

Thanks for this hub. I was thinking of writing one myself, but you beat me to it and did a good job. I got a kick out of the other comments, too...ALLERGIC TO SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS!! I LOVE IT.

I'm not a smoker at all, but I have a friend who is. He has tried to quite dozens of times due to the health risks. I bet he would love the idea of the e-cigarettes that take away a lot (not all, but a lot) of the health risks but still gets him the nicotine to soothe his cravings.

I am completely in favor of the e-cigarettes. As one doctor put it (in a video I watched on the topic), nicotine by itself isn't all that bad for you... it's kinda like caffeine. Large amounts are horrible for you, of course, but generally it's what's included with it that really pose serious health threats.

It's a horribly written and irresponsible article. They looked at brands from 2 companies and then passed judgment. This is simply protectionism by the large Tobacco Companies who stand to lose huge profits. There is no question it makes no sense to intentionally inhale smoke... but cigarettes have upwards of 4,000 chemicals. Electronic Cigarettes contain nicotine, water vapor, propylene glycol and "flavoring". This is not about health, it's about money. It's just more proof that the FDA can be purchased by lobbyists.

"Electronic cigarettes play no role in smoking cessation and don't add to a healthier lifestyle."

This statement could not be more FALSE there are hundreds of posts on ecigarette discussion boards from REAL PEOPLE stating how ecigarettes have helped them quit smoking.

You're welcome cw. Glad I could offer you something about the industry.

Mike, It seems so obvious that I can't believe that some of the Anit- Smoking campaigns are actually furthering the tobacco agenda.

It nearly makes me ill to think about how manipulative the tobacco industry can be to also use "non-smoking advocates" to further the tobacco industry. It's nauseating, simply nauseating.

I my sentiments exactly on your thoughts about the FDA being purchased by lobbyist. It's all about the money.

Obviously, they can't fool us. E-cigarettes are less harmful for smokers and so they must smoke them if they wish. I'm sure they are just trying to find a way to start taxing us as heavily for electronic liquid as they do with regular cigarettes. It probably costs 20 cents to manufacture a pack of regular cigarettes, which costs $6 plus sales tax in California. Tax, tax, tax, enough already.

If you wanna take a look at the health benefits I felt after switching to e-cigarettes:

Thanks for the informative article Sandra. I really hope your predictions re RX don't come true... Ack! I'm not looking at my new eCig as a smoking cessation product. I finally decided "hey, screw quitting... I rather like nicotine" and with the eCig my mouth doesn't feel, smell and taste nasty. Found your article as I was curious about the vapor and, as expected, I'm quite confident that it's orders of magnitude safer than inhaling cigarette smoke!

Cheers and thanks.

Hey Jim, thanks for your input. Sadly, the FDA and anti-smoking groups are having their way at the moment and I see it becoming harder for us to get them.

So far, one of the vendors I like that I found through Amazon has had to relocate his business to another site because Amazon has pulled the product from their warehouse.

Funnier yet is that they only pulled the device but not the nicotine cartridges. How is that for irony... wait hypocrisy is more like it.

As far as the FDA's concern over our safety, how about the folks that scarf down junk food, and wash it down with high-fructose laden liquids? Everyone ingest alot of things that are probably not good for them. The ONLY thing the FDA should be concerned about with ecigs is whether or not the second-hand vapor is safe or not.
