Explaining the Different Types of Stimulation

Today's electronic dog collars offer a variety of different types of stimulation. This includes both momentary stimulation as well as continuous stimulation. Most electronic dog collars today also offer different levels of stimulation.

The electronic dog collar fastens around the dog like a regular collar. Many of them are designed to be waterproof, an invaluable asset when you are training retrievers. You then hold the transmitter and send signals when appropriate to the dog. Here is how both different types of stimulation work and why you would want to use them:

Continuous Stimulation

This will send an electronic impulse to the dog for a period of about five seconds. After about seven seconds, it will time out. You will send this type of continuous stimulation to the dog upon pressing the button. It is usually used to halt a dog from running off or acting in an inappropriate manner when he is over-excited.

You will use the continuous form of stimulation when you are seeking a way to establish control over a dog that is out of control. The short nicks of momentary stimulation are not going to stop a dog who is chasing down a bird or is otherwise out of control. You need to gain control of the dog as quickly as possible. While he may ignore a nick from the momentary stimulation, he will not likely ignore the five seconds of continuous stimulation as it should stop his behavior.

Having control of your dog is important not only to you as a hunter, but also to him. Your dog depends on you for training and to keep him out of harm's way. Using the continuous form of stimulation re-establishes you as "top dog" and enables the dog to calm down.

Momentary Stimulation

The other type of stimulation used in electronic dog collars is the momentary stimulation. This is a short nick that pretty much gives the dog an instruction. It should be used in conjunction with a dog whistle or verbal command so that the dog begins to make the connection between his behavior and the stimulation. The momentary stimulation option is appropriate when the dog is under control and you are trying to teach him an aspect of hunting.

In addition to having a choice between continuous and momentary stimulation, you can also have a choice of different levels of stimulation; each of which can be used in accordance with the situation. The strongest level is enough to give a dog a jolt, while the weakest level is something that he will barely feel. You should always use the weakest level of stimulation that works when you are training a dog with an electronic dog collar.

Thanks to the new technology, electronic dog collars today are easier to use than ever for training you dog. In addition to being an excellent way to train gun dogs, they are also used for training dogs as pets as well as for other purposes. The different types and levels of stimulation offered by today's electronic dog collars make them the most efficient as well as caring way to train your dog.
