Today, many thousands of households across the United States find themselves deep in unsecured credit card debt. This is typically called consumer credit card debt and is a serious economic problem. For several decades we have had an economy that has been propelled by consumer spending at unsustainable levels and now it is time to start working to eliminate your credit card debt. If you have a deep load of credit card debt one of the ways you can consider working your way out of credit card debt is by considering a second job.

For a family with a single income it can be very challenging to make ends meet. For this reason, many spouses that are stay at home parents may be able to find a part time employment that they can do outside of the home for more income so that they can work off their debts. For many this can be a difficult choice because it can mean giving up time with children, relying on friends and family to keep the children while both parents are away and even the added expense of daycare or other childcare services. Understandably this choice to have more expenses when you are trying to work your way out of debt is a dificult one. You should carefully weigh the costs and benefits and make sure that it will be a net positive for your family's cash flow.

During these challenging economic times many people that feel as though they are underemployed may also consider adding a second job to their responsibilities to complement their income from their primary employment. If your primary job has a predictable schedule this can be easier to accomplish. If this is the case, then you may be able to schedule evenings or weekends for a part time job to complement your earnings. An additional 10-20 hours per week may seem like a worst choice option, but can add up quickly to greater income. Assuming $7 per hour that could provide $70-$140 per week or $280-$560 per month before taxes. If the scheduling is workable for a short period of time you may be able to make a sizable dent in your personal credit card issues. In fact, some part time jobs may pay more depending on your experience and qualifications and you may be able to make even quicker gains.

At the rate described above after 12 months you would have been able to bring in between 3360 and 6720 in extra income to pay down your debt. I would hope that's a sizable dent in the total that you owe.

For some others, their schedule is either unpredictable or does not easily acomodate the scheduling that adding a second part time job with an employer would require.  For these people I would suggest trying to find hobbies or skills that you have and see if you can market them independently.  Business license considerations may come into play here but this can be a more flexible way to add more income into your finances.

For instance, let's say you are a marketer you may work on a certain amount of freelance work to add to your income.  Or, if you have a hobby of woodworking this might be an opportunity to see how those skills might be marketed in your local community.  If you feel as though you don't have many marketable skills look for odd-jobs such as debris and litter cleanup, brush clearing, mowing yards as potential avenues for extra income.

Depending on your education level you may be able to look into the idea of tutoring as a way to earn some extra money.  In some cases the demands could be less than you would imagine to simply help a youngster with their homework.  Many times parents may feel as though they are not good enough at math or other subjects to assist their children and other times they may simply have too much of their own workload to help their children with homework.

The great first step of course is to evaluate the skills you have and think about which of those skills are in high demand.  Look through classified postings to get ideas, both in print and online.  The over-riding idea is to remain postiive and optimistic in your search towards eliminating your credit card debt.  It wasn't accumulated in one day (I hope!) and it won't be eliminated that quickly, just start working at it and don't let up until you have paid off your unsecured debt!
