Elk Spirit
61
by Nancy J. Bailey

You were born in the meadows
In the wild high country
Your long legs unfolded
You played in the trees
.
Your whole family led you and showed you the way
I watched as you grew every day
.
Teach me oh shaman the lessons you know
The wind in your nose and the high country snow
Your power and majesty, your bugle call
Keep going
Keep moving
Outrun them all
.
Now you walk in the timber
Where trees touch the sky
And when the storms roll in
You hold your head high
.
I watch and I listen and I'll try to know
The things that your spirit will show
.
Show me oh shaman the visions you saw
The crown that you carry, the high country law
Your power and majesty, your bugle cry
Be stronger
Be bolder
Be brave and climb high

This is a great idea. I love the idea of writing to benefit a charity. I had actually hoped to have someone who is musically literate put some of these poems to music -- especially the ghost horse one. Can you just hear Garth Brooks singing that to hoofbeats in the background? :-) Thanks again Joni.
Nancy,
I really loved this poem. So descriptive that I nearly felt that I was there. I felt the rythm in my heart. Thank You :)
Kari
Thank you so much!
Im glad to see not all of the spirit songs have died. Great work...follow your spirit....

WOW, I loved it, Nancy!
It would be great if you could add audio to this page and read this poem out loud to us like a Poetry Reading.
Another great painting too - again the beautiful combination of colors. You might want to do a search on http://www.goodsearch.com for free audio programs.
Remember to pick a charity on GoodSearch. I picked Adopt-A-Foal & Equine Rescue, Inc.GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it as you would any search engine. You receive quality search results from Yahoo. Watch the donations add up!
You simply select an organization from a database of thousands or add your own, then tell all your friends, tell your friends to tell their friends, and so on. If 1,000 people with the same charity search twice a day for a year, the charity earns $7,300.
