Elvis Presley IS So Special
68I was eleven years old when Elvis Presley died. I thought he was fat and ugly, and I really didn't understand what the big deal was. But thanks to peer pressure, I spent my book fair money on a cheesy biography at school that year.
My grandfather said Johnny Cash was the king of country, and Elvis was the king of rock and roll. I accepted that, sort of, but I noticed that Don (as I called my grandfather) only played Johnny Cash. Well, he played some other stuff, like Leon Redbone, but he never played Elvis, that I remember.
Peer pressure and grandfatherly influence. Are those the reasons I love Elvis? Maybe. But they are not bad reasons, necessarily. My husband is the biggest Elvis fan that I know. And he caught the bug from his daddy. Nothin' wrong with some good family traditions.
If you are, let's say 25 or older, and you don't know yet "what is so special about Elvis", then it's about time for you to learn.
Elvis Presley started a revolution in the music industry. I don't think any music enthusiast would disagree. Who continues to top the "top earning deceased celebrity list", with just a one-year exception from Kurt Cobain?
Let me introduce you to a few of my favorites, and then maybe you'll understand.
This is the one my husband (and my ex-husband) wants played at his funeral. (Side note, that is the ONLY thing they have in common!)
My Way
How can you listen to this without getting goose bumps?
You Gave Me A Mountain
Sometimes it's hard for me to find my national pride, and as a self-proclaimed liberal, this one is kind of hard for me to admit, but damn, this gets my patriotic soul stirring.
American Trilogy
Another cool thing about Elvis, he crossed several genres. Here's my gospel favorite.
Amazing Grace
Oh wait, this is my gospel favorite.
How Great Thou Art
Damn. Oops. Shouldn't cuss talking about gospel. But I love this one, too. Of course he's getting a lot of help from J.D. Sumner on this one.
Why Me Lord?
So many of Elvis' songs make me cry.
Suspicious Minds
The saddest song I've ever heard, too.
I´m So Lonesome I Could Cry
I try to convince myself my husband is NOT talking about me when he sings this one.
Separate Ways
Others make me smile.
Can’t Help Falling in Love
This one is somewhere in the middle for me, for making me cry and smile.
I’ll Remember You
Some I think Johnny did better - you decide.
Elvis – Bridge Over Troubled Water
Johnny – Bridge Over Trouble Water
Ssshhhh....don't tell my husband I put that part in here.
Beautiful voice. What else can one say?
Thankyouverymuch. I guess that's all.

I was a little to young to "get it" when Elvis first hit the charts. I thought he was ugly even when I was a teenager. He looked like a hick to me. But, I loved many of his songs and he did have a beautiful voice. Still I was one of the monority in fanhood.
Thanks, Ananta - how did I miss that one! Another fave.
Mama, do you remember Don listening to Elvis?
I love it! By far, one of my favorite hubs. I guess, because we have enjoyed Elvis together so many times. Has "He" seen this hub? He could only be impressed!
He's probably twisting his hips iout of sheer joy up there, LeaAnne, singing "Well, that's allright, mama" :)
I think LeaAnne means a different 'he' :) But LeaAnne, you know who can't read!
O well, the other 'he' could also be singing "That's alright, mama" :)
Elvis was my first hero. In primary school we went to all his movies "love me tender" GI Blues" , "blue Hawaii" My mother adored Elvis and I loved his Voice. I was in Cape Town on a business trip the day he died. I remember it well.
Great hub
Great hub. I have been a fan since 1968 and the Comeback Special. I like to think he is hiding too!

O, I remember that day, August 16, 1977. A friend from my neighborhood had infected me and I had just started to work on a collection of Elvis records, when BAM. The King had died.
There I was, having spent time on getting to know and appreciate this man, this artist. Having spent hours, together with this friend, listening to his records. And all of the sudden, he simply died on too much of everything. I cried. It was the first and last time ever that I cried because someone I didn’t personally know passed away.
And still Elvis has a special place. I grew to appreciate a wide range of music, but Elvis will always make me listen with more attention.
Fortunately he is alive, living in Germany, so with all the come backs of retired artists and bands the King will probably start touring Europe soon ;)
