Email Marketing: 1-Hint That Will Change Your Opt-In Subsribers from Drive-By-Clickers to Responsive Learners

Email Marketing is the Fastest Way to Build the "You" Brand
Marketing by Email is by far the most sought after subject with online marketers today because if done right, it could explode your business name and the "You" brand across the Internet. The reason Internet marketers search daily for any type of tidbit or tip is because it can be the most frustrating of all avenues in building your business online.
Check out the Warrior Forum sometime and search for keyword terms like "Subscriber List", or "Email Marketing" or even "Auto-responder" and you will find hundreds upon hundreds of posts, threads and comments about how to best communicate with a list of email subscribers.
If you have built a list of Email Subscribers and are not having luck with engaging them from your message, you might just be leaving out one very import ingredient, but keep reading, I will get there, I promise.
Why Does a Person Subscribe to Your Email Marketing List?
Before I share my one hint, I think it's extremely important to ask the question, "Why do people sign up for my list in the first place?" The answer may be different for different business models, but for the most part, in some form or another, "You" have convinced them that due to your expertise, knowledge and insight, they may benefit in someway by knowing what you know.
- People subscribe to YOUR email list because they want to know what you know, but ultimately you have to get them to participate. But how do you do that?
If Your Email Subscribers are not Responding they might be telling You Something
One of the mysteries of email marketing revolves around "How to engage your Readers?". What baffles most marketers who have large subscriber lists, is the fact that a hefty percentage of them either don't open the message at all, or open the message and may only skim through the highlights, or maybe they read the entire note, but don't follow strategic links that you have provided to allow them to learn even more. I call these folks "Drive-By Clickers." They love being on the list, but rarely act when asked to.
If you are like me, tracking website and subscriber statistics, is a major key to learning what your readers are telling you. But sometimes just looking at the numbers only won't give you a clear picture of what is in the mind's of those reading your material. With Email Marketing it takes a different approach to understand what drives people to do what they do.
1-Hint that might just engage Your Readers More....
Engaging your email subscriber list can be difficult and frustrating at times, but with the right approach you can turn your readers into ones that can't wait to hear more of what you have to say.
I have subscribed to many lists in the past and I have to admit I was one of those "Drive-By" clickers. Yes, if the subject line was catchy I would open the email, but generally I skimmed for things that might interest me but ultimately deleted the email. Why did I do that? One reason, 90% of what came to my inbox was nothing more than a call to get me to buy something.
Don't get me wrong, offering your email subscriber list something of value by purchasing your program or an affiliate program is a good thing because back end sales can bring marketers true online income. But the question that should be asked is, "Is the owner of the list just trying to sell a product to make a quick buck, or are they truly interested in building a relationship?"
- If YOUR email marketing list is all about selling the next best e-book, or super duper software program, can you really say that providing VALUE is the intention?
To really provide value, you first need to know what your subscribers are looking for. How do you do that? ASK!!!
What is the 1-Hint that could turn YOUR email subscribers into engaged readers instead of Drive-By Clickers? Ask them what they want, it's that simple. But don't just ask a question in an email and hope that they will respond, ask in the form of a SURVEY.
Unlock the Key To Email Marketing with Surveys
Surveying your email subscriber list is the perfect way to find out everything you need to know about your readers. Not only will you find out what they want and need, you will gain a better understanding of what to offer them. Let me say that again.
If you know what your opt-in email list wants, won't you be better equipped to provide it to them?
Below is an example of a brief survey that I sent out to a small list of Opt-In subscribers. Let me provide a little background first. Over the last couple months I was able to generate a small list of subscribers, 27 at the time I sent I sent out the survey, all Network Marketers, and I have been communicating with them about once a week, maybe a little more.
After about 10 emails, a pattern started to emerge. I had lots of "Drive-By Clickers." So, I decided that I wanted to find out exactly what these 27 folks really wanted to know or needed to be successful in their Home Business venture.
So I put together a survey at a site called Survey Monkey, and sent it out to my list.
See below for the results.
50% said this was their 1st Year in Network Marketing
Almost 45% said that they have been in 3 or more Network Marketing opportunities
22% use all the methods but 33% said they Buy Leads to build their Network Marketing business
44% only sponsor 1-2 people in thier MLM Business
Just over 88% said they only make $99 or less a month in their Network Marketing business
8 shared their frustrations with building their Network Marketing opportunity
Surveying Your Email Subscribers Could Help You Learn Their Wants and Needs
These survey questions might have been a little direct, but the response and answers gave me a huge insight to the needs of my subscribers.
Based on the responses of question #1, I found out that many of my subscribers were new to MLM. This gives a great angle to help provide initial facts about the industry and lead into sharing how important internet training is.
Question #3 shows that a majority of the list still uses some of the older methods of MLM which could lead me into providing value with Attraction Marketing tips and techniques.
Question #5 is my favorite. It underscores the fact that there are a lot of people out there in Network Marketing who are not earning their way. This might lead me to show them how people can add multiple streams of income to their portfolio while continuing to build their main Home Business.
Of course the last question shows the responses of the things that frustrate them the most about building their business, which leaves the door open to a whole host of communications to address their concerns.
- Surveying your Opt-In Subscriber list is a great way to not only engage your readers, but could give you the insight of how to market to them more efficiently and turn some of those Drive-By Clickers into responsive learners.

Hi Mike,
Great Hub and fantastic timing. I am actually considering putting together a survey where the target is my warm market to check the perception of a certain opp I am considering. My main conern is not trying to make it sound"salesy" since I am really looking for their opinion and not selling anything.
Thanks for the piece and I hope all is going well,
Jim

Hey Jim, Anitak and Masoncuty,
Thank you all for the great comments, I appreciate them very much. Surveys are a great way to gage your readers and hone in on what makes them tick. Once you know what they want, all you need to do is provide it. Success can't help but happen then.

Thanks Mike. Very good Hub! I have been working on a couple of surveys and this proves what I suspected, that if you don't know what someone want's how can you supply it to them.
Hi Judy,
Thanks for visting and the nice comment, don't forget to come back :-)
Thanks,
Mike
Hey iron1,
Thank you for the great comment. You are right, it is hard to market when you don't know for sure what folks want or need, survey's are a great way to find things out you never could otherwise.
Hope your surveys go well, thank again for the comment,
Mike Witt

Hello Mike,
This information is truly valuable, I have started to develop a following on my newsletter and after sending a few issues, I feel like I am talking to the wall. I am not getting much of a response, you make a great point I am going to ask them, and find out what they want.
Roberto
Hey Roberto,
Thank you for the great comment. Glad to hear your list is growing, and yes, ask them, I think you will find out exactly what they want.
Thanks again,
Mike Witt
This is info I need Mike, thanks for writing it up and the graphs are great stuff! And I think you are right about engaging our e-mail readers, which is hard at times! I like Michael Cheney's e-mails, he always uses some sort of 'the sky is falling' techniques is his subject line and throughout the body of text and keeps it short, sweet and to the point.
Anyway, thanks for the advice here, I will use it.
James A Nichols
Hi James,
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate that very much. I have had a few of Michael's emails come to my inbox, and they are very good.
Glad I could help,
Thanks again,
Mike
Mike,
Fantastic. You touched a nerve here, man. I think everyone needs this information...I sure do. Email marketing is certainly an aspect of the internet marketing skill set that must be developed, and for many, it is also one of the last. I'm going to use some of your suggestions. I really think you hit the bulls-eye with this article.
Furthermore, I feel you've done a good job of using your links appropriately.
Eric Walker
Hey Eric,
Thank you for the wonderful comment, I am glad that you like it. Email marketing can be a challenging animal, but is the one thing that could take a person's business to new levels if done right.
Thanks again for the great comment, I appreciate that very much.

This is fantastic content Mike! I think you could be giving tutorials at Renegade University in the near future. I think I only have one analytical bone in my body so I'm looking to your articles to fill in what I need to know.
Hi Irene,
Thank you for the wonderful comment. I don't know about teaching, but if it wasn't for Renegade University, I would not be in this position that is for sure.
Thanks again, and maybe I have helped to spark one extra analytical bone for you :-).

Mike
Hi Mike,
I am just working on a survey for my email list and this article has given me some good information. As always, your articles are value packed and I always learn something new reading them.
Patricia
Excellent hub Mike. As someone who used to work in market research, I'm all for surveys. I like the way you combined both quantitative and qualitative questions. In addition to gathering valuable information, surveys show that you care about what your email list thinks.
Thanks for sharing - I will stumble this for you!
all the best,
Cindy
Hi Cindy and Patricia,
Thank you both for your wonderful comments, I am glad that you found my information useful.
Email Marketing can be like throwing a dart at the back of a moving car, but if you know what your subscriber want, you just replaced that dart with a bazooka, much easier to hit that car then :-).
Thanks again,
Mike Witt

Great info. I don't think I have seen this information online. Then again, I could have missed it. At least I did not miss it this time. Provides me with a lot to think about if I want to succeed as an online network marketer.
