Email Survey Overview

Crafting an effective email survey that successfully gathers the information you need can be a very challenging task. For this reason, we've studied the five elements for creating email marketing surveys that get the attention of your customers.

The big picture

The purpose of your survey should be defined clearly before anything else. The survey should be brief and concise because if not, readers will not be inclined to finish it. Although some data shows that a 10 minute survey is ideal, remember that this is email and you may want to shoot for an even shorter survey. And don't forget those pesky little details, like when the survey should be completed by or what the customer will receive for taking the survey. You'll probably get more responses if you offer your survey takers a prize or gift for completing your survey.

The language

It is necessary to keep the language of your survey easily understandable and simple, so that anyone – regardless of background – can follow it and finish it easily and quickly. The use of jargons and acronyms must be avoided as it may not suit global audiences.

The survey questions

It is very important to start the survey with some very simple and interesting questions. The beginning simple questions should allow the users to answer without thinking much and wasting time. The interesting questions should inspire the users to keep the reading going on to complete the survey without getting bored with it and leaving it half way.

The format of the questions is very important. It is necessary to plan the analysis of the information before sending the final survey version as the statistical analysis will depend on the results of the questions. Questions that are not that important to the survey should be kept to the last portion of the email as the users may lose interest or not answer them at all. You should also create a privacy policy that reflects survey data, which protects your company should any of your information get accidentally leaked beyond the scope of the project.

Make your questions open ended and your answer choices specific. If you create survey questions and answers that are too vague, it will be difficult to analyze your data and get a good handle on what your data really means. Also, keep your questions in a logical order. Don't ask about a product in question 1, skip around to other subjects in questions 2 and three, and then fall back to the same subject as question 1 in question 4. Your survey questions show flow.

When you create your survey and get ready to send it, let a small group of customers or your employees take it first, just to make sure everything makes sense. This can help you know if any minor details are skipped and can help you correct any silly mistakes that might embarrass you or your company.
