Email Newsletters: Four Big Subject Line Blunders
58
Users generally look at the subject line and then decide if they want to read the mail or not. If the subject line of your email newsletter is poor, then it is unlikely that your subscribers will open the mail. The other factor that influences this decision is the threat of viruses, Trojans and worms. Hence, companies send out specially designed email campaigns to capture the attention of the readers. It is mandatory that you provide lines which catch the attention of the readers. However, some marketers find it difficult to come up with catchy lines. In the process, they may make some mistakes, unknowingly. The following are some errors you should avoid, while writing subject lines:

Repetition
Your subscribers may find it very uninspiring if they see the same old subject line every month. You invest a lot of time and energy to develop content for the newsletter. Hence, avoid using repetitive subject lines. Over a period of time, your subscribers may think you are not in a position to share anything new with them.
Including issues or version numbers
Your readers may not be bothered about the issue or version number of the newsletter they are reading. Their primary interest in any newsletter campaign will be the content. The issue or version number is surely not a part of the content. Hence, get rid of them from subject lines. In doing so, you are saving valuable space, which can be used to add compelling information.
Including the name of the organization or the date
It’s pointless to include the name of your organization in the subject line, for the simple reason that you may have to include it in the ‘from’ field. If you include it in both fields, then you will waste precious space. Do not include the date in the subject field as all email services have a separate section that record the date and time of the e-mail’s arrival.
Capitalizing subject lines and including currency symbols
The act of capitalizing subject lines is called shouting. If you write the subject line in capitals, then your newsletter will trigger spam filters and will not reach your subscribers. The same applies for including currency symbols in the subject line as well.
These are some blunders that you should avoid, when you write a subject line for your newsletter campaign. The subject line is the most important component of your newsletter as it plays a big part in the success or failure of your campaign.
