Employee Hunt: How to Find Great Employees

You are putting up a business and your search for the best employees is on. You have put out job advertisements, have written job descriptions carefully and have spread the word that you are in need of an excellent and talented work force for your budding company.

Then the answers came flooding in. Hundreds of applicants arrive in your doorstep, each of them hoping to be the chosen one. But then you are confused and overwhelmed. You ask yourself, “how do I know which ones are the good applicants?”

Hiring applicants is one of the most difficult tasks an employer or business owner has to do. This is because as we all know, employees play an important role in building a good image for a company and producing products or providing service that will contribute to its growth and success. One false move in the hiring procedure and you may end up hiring someone that will only damage the name and reputation of the company you worked so hard for. Because of this, it is imperative that you are able to distinguish the bad eggs from the good ones so that none of the bad eggs would be able to get into your dish and spoil it. Here are some brilliant tips you can use when hiring employees.

Resume analysis

To avoid having too many people to interview, it is a good idea to start the short listing from the resumes that applicants have collected. Because if you schedule for interview everyone who submitted a resume, you will be wasting a lot of your time.

When looking at resumes, you should not only look at the credentials of the applicant, you should also call up previous employers to double check the information stated in the resume. Remember, resume falsifications have become so rampant these days that it is already quite difficult to know which applicants are telling the truth.

Employment Background Screening

Examinations

It is important to include examinations in the hiring procedure because as mentioned earlier, not everything that is stated in the resume is true. There are some cases when applicants would claim that they are skillful in particular field just to appear qualified for the position. When you accept them for the job, they would just cram in learning it. You cannot expect excellent results from these kinds of people.

Having the applicants take written and practical examination will be a good gauge of their knowledge and skills on that particular area that is needed in the position they are applying for. For example, for a web and graphic designer position, you must test the applicant’s skills on computer software such as Photoshop and HTML. It would not make sense to have applicants for this position take Math exams.

Interviews

Conducting a series of structured interviews would enable you to get to know the real person behind the applicant. This is because during the first interview, an applicant will be more self-conscious but he will loosen up and reveal more of himself after a series of interviews.

Having a guide to follow during the interview is good so that you can follow a consistent format on all your applicants. You must always ask open-ended questions that would encourage an applicant to talk more. Be sure to take notes of your observations about the applicant during the interview because it will be impossible to remember all of them after you have interviewed so many people.

Background checks

An employment background screening is a crucial part of the hiring procedure because it can reveal a great deal of information about the applicant’s background that you probably would not see on the resume or the applicant will not tell you about during the interview. For example, a background check provides criminal records so you would know if an applicant has any outstanding warrants or past cases of felonies.

Aside from that, the information gathered from the background check especially the educational and employment history will enable an employer to verify information stated in the resume to see if an applicant is truly qualified for the position.

Finding good employees can be very difficult nowadays but it is not entirely impossible. With these simple methods, you will be able to screen your applicants more effectively.
