Employer Tips: How to Become a Good Boss
Unless you want your employees to constantly talk behind your back and complain about you, you would want to become a good boss. It is not that difficult to be one, in fact being a kind and generous employer takes just as much work as being a cruel and nasty one. Being good has better rewards too.
Here are essential tips on how to become a good employer whom employees will respect and be loyal to.
1.- Give out Effective Supervision
You cannot expect your employees to be productive if you do not provide effective supervision. Give out clear instructions, be firm in your decision, and manage your employees in such a way that you will be able to maximize their talents and skills.
2.- Provide a Safe Working Environment
As an employer, it is your duty to ensure that your workplace is safe from all possible hazards. The building where your office is located should be structurally sound. Have a professional conduct building maintenance and inspection regularly.
Aside from that, protect your employees from possible fire hazards by installing high quality fire safety devices in your office. Prepare them from fire emergencies by informing them about all the locations of fire exits in the building and by conducting regular fire drills.
3.- Encourage Good Working Relations
Aside from safety, you should also ensure that you are able to provide a positive work environment by cultivating positive work relations among your employees. You can achieve this through teambuilding seminars and activities, and by being an effective mediator between employees who have problems with each other. A peaceful and positive work environment results in employees that are more productive.
4.- Provide Ongoing Trainings
Employees, especially the top achieves, will appreciate your efforts to provide them with continuous education to upgrade and improve their skills. Just be sure that the seminars or lectures that you have conducted in your office are relevant to the work of your employees.
5.- Formulate an Effective Hiring Procedure
One of the biggest challenges that an employer has to face is finding good employees to work for his or her company. This is because with the rising rate of resume falsification and growing number of applicants with criminal records, it has become difficult to determine a person’s character and qualifications by merely looking at the resume or conducting an interview.
In addition to the standard process of resume analysis and interviews, you should also be able to conduct a background check such as a criminal background check, this way you will be informed if an employee has been involved with any type of felonies in the past. You surely do not want a fraud, thief or a murderer to get into your company and work with your customers.
6.- Give Proper Motivation
A good boss is able to motivate his or her employees through proper methods such as rewards, recognition, favorable workers compensation and incentives. Remember, praises should be done in public while criticisms should always be kept private.
7.- Take Criticisms Constructively
Speaking of criticisms, it is important to know that just because you are a boss does not mean that you are excluded from this. In fact, expect to hear some criticisms about your work and your method of management. But do not take this negatively. Instead, use this to improve your weakness. Do not take this personally either. After all, you really cannot please everybody.
8.- Communicate with your Employees
Communication is always a two-way process and being a good boss means that you are not the only one who does all the talking. Be a good listener too. Make sure that aside from letting your employees know about your expectations, instructions, and pep talks, you also listen to what they have to say.
9.- Set a good example
As a boss, you always have to show your employees that you come on time, do your job well and that you do not let personal problems affect your performance.
10.- Have a good balance between being fun and being authoritative
It is a good idea to let your employees know see the fun side of you by joking around with them or having fun. There is a time and place for that such as when you are outside the workplace. But once inside the office, you should exercise your authority and give out the necessary discipline to your employees.
A real good boss is not someone who is just pretending to be one for the sake of making profits but someone who is genuinely concerned with the welfare of his or her employees.

good point Take Criticisms Constructively
If my employees are calling me "Ebeneezer" is that a bad sign?
Good outlined points for being a good boss. My husband was so generous with his employees that he even used to award them with some trips that he had won and could have taken. His theory was that if it were not for the good employees, the company would not have succeeded and been eligible for winning the awards......thus, he shared them. His employees LOVED him!
This is a nice basic hub on how to be a good boss. I do not wish to do so though!
A good boss when confronted with a problem will not point fingers at one of their employees. They absorb the blame on themselves and the whole department.
