Employment Background Checks in Florida

The incidences of hiring bad employees have risen to an all-time high across the country and many employers have grown alarmed over this fact. In Florida, it is not any different. This is why, the practice of conducting background search on potential applicants has been a standard part of the hiring procedure in many parts of this state for the last ten years.

Conducting employment background checks has become necessary because of a wide variety of reasons. For one, employers in Florida want to make sure that they only hire the most qualified candidates and more importantly, avoid the risk of having bad employees get into their company. Events of work place violence and crime as well as unethical business practices such as fraud, embezzlement and theft are not uncommon in this state but background searches have tremendously decreased these incidences.

An employee background screening reveals valuable information about an individual’s background, which can greatly help an employer in deciding whether a candidate is fit to work for a certain company or not. Information supplied by a background check includes educational background, employment history, criminal records, medical records, credit reports, driving records, military records, incarceration records, and many others.

The information on educational background and employment history gives the employer an idea if an applicant possesses the necessary qualifications required by the position being applied for. Criminal records inform an employer about any criminal offense that an applicant has been involved with while medical records become a gauge to see if an applicant is physically and mentally fit to work for the company.

Some employers even require drug testing, which is also very important because drug use can alter a person’s perception and behavior, making him do things that he is not in control of. An employee who is under the influence of drug may resort to violent or harmful behavior that can inflict harm on customers or co-employees.

It is true that while the benefits of a background check may seem priceless for an employer, there are still many issues regarding legalities and ethics that go around it. In Florida, most employers agree that a background check is a big help to their hiring process but applicants on the other hand, feel that this step is an intrusion to their private life.

Moreover, applicants argue that what they did in their past lives has hardly anything to do with their competency and qualifications at present. They contend that many people go through a bad phase in their lives but this does not mean that they should not be given a chance to turn over a new leaf.

The employers, however, believe otherwise. For them, the risk is too big to overlook and while some of them claim that they would want to consider people with flawed history, they say that it is too dangerous to put the lives and welfare of their customers and other employees at stake.

Many different cases on negligent hiring are what prompted this mindset among employers. Employers who failed to make a thorough investigation on their employee’s backgrounds had ended up hiring employees who eventually did something perilous to a customer or co-worker. The end result was devastating for the employer, who was held liable and who was charged with a negligent hiring lawsuit. This is why, it is no wonder that many employers want to be careful in their hiring procedure.

Background checks are widely available in Florida, probably because the demand for it is growing bigger and bigger. In order for an employer to find the best background check company, he must do a thorough comparison of services, which means that he should not stop at the first company that he meets.

This way, he will be able to enlist the services of a company that gives accurate and updated information. It would be a big mistake to drive away a potentially good employee just because of misinformation.

Background checks are helpful not only in Florida but in many parts of the country. Not only do they ensure that only qualified applicants get into your company, they also greatly reduce the risk of encountering negligent hiring lawsuits.
