Ending The American Affair

The Devil Woman Named Credit
For many Americans, it's almost a revolution, or maybe better put, a revelation -- It's time to end our love affair -- with credit cards. Sweeping the country, this sick long-time love-hate relationship is finally being ended, in both big cities and across small town America. We are finally falling in love with a real keeper -- cash.
For some of us, it took maxing out our credit cards to shake the devil woman of credit that had enslaved us for years. Sure, she was so seductive.
Like a predator "other woman" she enticed so many of us to spend what we did not have. She told us that is was OK to indulge ourselves when we needed an emotional high. She made it easy to cheat that not so much fun wife of saving mentality. She tempted us with toys. She was the one who gave the green light to splurge at Christmas, and not worry that it would take until the next Christmas to pay for those acts of buying love. She let us pretend we were bigger and better than others who didn't have her. She seduced us into thinking we were more successful than we really were.
She was a narcotic to which we were addicted, and even the government sanctioned and continues our not-so-secret love affair. The members of Congress are also her sweethearts.
A New Way Of Life
The new old skills of learning to live on what you earn, saving for what you want and for emergencies, identifying needs vs. wants -- is what' right about this consumer credit crunch and hopefully is going to make Americans be more "financially wise."
All Affairs Are Not Without Consequences
No gain without pain, doesn't just apply in the gym. Many are not too happy about being made to give up their financial devil woman. The devil woman named credit, isn't taking this lightly or laying down -- she's quite mad.
Stores are scrambling trying to reassemble their marketing to the realities of payday spending cycles. This is a back to the future truth in people returning to cash.
By all accounts, the American devil woman of credit card debt is feeling pretty anxious and mad right now. She's not pleased in this major shift in consumer behavior. She's not comfortable with an after pay day drop in spending (that lasts for days), following her lovers bursts of spending around payday. Such marketing deviations have her scrambling for new ways to attract credit spending.
She's now found that thanks to mounting job losses, her former lovers can't even buy the most basic of necessities right before payday or their unemployment check. The American devil woman of credit card debt also has her own problems too. If she tightens her finance terms, or raises interests rates, she may lose her remaining credit card lovers -- she also risks even more defaults and has to answer to her own master -- the investors.
Unless the devil woman of debt can find new, less savy lovers -- she may end up with a lot more celibate life.
Devil Woman - Marty Robbins
Devil Woman - The Consumer Lyrics
All in a daydream, the echoes of Marty Robbins was singing about the Devil Woman in a simpler time, when the use of credit cards and credit borrowing wasn't the norm. It made me think about how it might be possible that his Mary changed her name to Money.
I told money about us
Told her about a great sin
Money cried and forgave me
And money took me back again
Said if I wanted my freedom
I could be free ever more
But I don't want to be
And I don't want to see
Money cry anymore
Money is waitin' and weepin'
Down in our shack by the sea
Even after I've hurt her
Money's still in love with me
Devil woman it's over
Trapped no more by your charm
'Cause I don't want to stay
I want to get away
Woman let go of my arm
Devil woman, you're evil
Like the dark coral reef
Like the winds that bring high tide
You bring sorrow and grief
Made me ashamed to face Money
Barely had the strength to tell
Skies are not so black
Money took me back
Money has broken your spell
Running along by the seashore
Running as fast as I can
Even the seagulls are happy
Glad I'm coming home again
Never again will I ever
Cause another tear to fall
Down the beach I see
What belongs to me
The one I want most of all
Oh devil woman
Devil woman don't follow me
Devil woman let me be
And leave me alone
I'm going back home
Obviously not the original lyrics and song by: Marty Robbins
Well, when Marty Robbins wrote both the words and music to the original version of that song, I'm sure that's not what Marty had in mind. However, what my daydream had in mind, was that like the man, who went back home to his wife after being seduced by the devil woman -- I was wondering:
Will Americans will go back home again to a happy shack by the seashore and be forever happy to stay there? Or will old lovers slip back into seductive cheating heart ways, and sin again -- once the little woman seems to have forgotten the Devil Woman.

Thanks Anthony James Barnett -- I think a lot of people would have benefited if there had been more teachers like yours.
Excellent hub Jerilee and an interesting analogy. I personally think that after Americans dig out from under, cash may become king once again as it should have been all along.
Thanks Peggy W! I'm hoping you are right.

Thanks Nancy's Niche! Both may cost the whole planet everything worthwhile.
America and the world over, some exceptions maybe. But we all need to return to sensible management of money and that comes with accepting you can't have everything and you can't have it now.
Thanks Brian S! It definitely comes down to need vs. want.
I agree with you in most of points. We should say bye bye to devil women named credit.
Thanks abinavis!

An interesting Hub, yet again, Jerilee.
I've never been able to understand the need for the credit society. Surely it's common sense that it HAS to be repaid at some time.
As a boy, my teacher told me, "Save for what you want. When you have enough, IF you still want it, fine - purchase it. But you'll probably find after you've waited and saved, you realise don't want it after all."
Good advice.... Stood me in good stead.
