If you have decided to purchase energy efficient windows, skylights, or storm windows for your home then you may qualify for a tax credit of up to $200.00. A credit is different than a deduction, a tax deduction will reduce the amount of income subject to tax, a tax credit reduces the tax itself and may increase the amount of your federal refund.

Exterior Windows & Skylights

New energy efficient windows and skylights must be energy star certified or meet the International energy conservation code (IECC) to qualify for the tax credit. Only the price of the windows can be deducted. You may not include installation costs. Remember to save your receipt on these items as well as the energy star labels from your windows. You are eligible to receive 10% of your cost up to $200.00 for exterior windows and skylights.

Storm Windows

Energy efficient storm windows must meet the IECC as well as the exterior window installed in conjunction with the storm window. You must have a manufacturer certification statement to claim this tax credit for storm windows. Do not include installation expenses. You are eligible to receive 10% of your cost up to $200.00 for storm windows.

Exterior windows, skylights, and storm windows must be installed on the taxpayerʼs principal residence. The maximum credit that can be claimed in one year for energy efficient windows is $500.00 which will also include any other energy improvements such as doors, central air and metal roofs.

You may want to consider installing numerous energy efficient improvements in separate tax years. To claim these credits you must use the IRS form 5695. You may obtain this form for free at an online tax software service such as TurboTax online.

Please visit TurboTax Online for free information on energy efficient window tax credits. If you are looking for a fast and simple way to find out if you qualify for these credits try TurboTax Online. There is never a charge unless you decide to use their services to file your taxes.

NEW 2009 Stimulus Bill Tax Credit for Replacement Windows

RESTRICTIONS TO TAX CREDIT

Windows ONLY Qualify for the 30% Tax Credit up to $1500 if the windows are equal to or below a 0.30 U Factor and 0.30 SHGC If the window DO NOT meet these requirements and the homeowner will not get the Tax Credit. Homeowners need to spend more money for these types of energy efficient windows. Energy Star requirements do not apply for this Tax Credit. Window dealers need to read the actual stimulus bill. Most windows sold today will not meet these requirements.

I also installed new energy efficient windows in July of 2008 and also was told that I could write these off an income tax time. I also just found out that I cannot. This is not fair at all! Is there anything I can do?

thanks, tammy

Ditto--me too! I purchased new windows in 2008 and cannot receive any tax credit. It is not fair!

Hey everbody, the people that sold the windows were told yes they were renewing the credit for 08, then they didn't get it signed in time, so they decided to put it off until 09 and start up again and now they have gone and changed that. This is on the gov web sites that all these changes occurred in 08 and 09. Your poor salesmen are doing their best, but everybody keeps changing the rules on them.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (2009 Stimulus Bill) gives homeowners a $1,500 Tax Credit for Installing New Energy Efficient Replacement Windows and Doors in their homes. Requirements - Tax Credit Only for Replacement Windows. New Replacement Windows MUST have a 0.30 U-Factor(Value) or less AND a 0.30 SHGC to qualify. Energy Star is NO LONGER the Requirement for vinyl replacement windows.Tax Credit is 30% of cost to replace windows up to $1500.Most Windows WILL NOT QUALIFY for this $1,500 Tax Credit. Aluminum and Aluminum Clad windows probably will not qualify. Some Vinyl Replacement Windows Will Qualify. Some Vinyl Replacement Windows Will NOT Qualify. Check NFRC Stickers to make sure vinyl replacement windows qualify. Homeowners must keep records that the vinyl windows meet the requirements. IRS will have forms for homeowners for tax credit. This Replaces the $500 tax credit for 2009*.

I just recently read the fine print to getting the tax deductions: below a 0.30 U Factor and 0.30 SHGC. I looked at all the windows at Home Depot and could not find any that met these requirements. Just because a window has an Energy Star label does not mean in necessarily qualifies for a tax credit. Has anyone found windows that qualify?

John brooks  says:

Yes home depot does have windows that qualify the andersen 200 series with Low-e finelite grills and the 400 series with low-e4 all qualify. Also the feather river fiberglass doors qualify also

That's really unfortunate for many of us that the government didn't elect to make the credit retroactive for people who installed them in 2008. Doesn't make sense.

Wayne  says:

So has anyone seen efforts to have 2008 retroactive to 2009 tax year? How does one go about petitioning a request for consideration? Does this go through a congressperson?

I also replaced all my windows and doors in my home .Had sunroom torn down and replaced with deck.Sunroom was losing a lot of our heat.To me this should also qualify for rebate.When you replace and repair something that is causing heat loss.We did not put sunroom up,it was done by previous owners.All toll our expense has been in the area of 40,000.00.Not counting new heater system that cost over 10,000.00.We need better laws for the deserving citizens.;

I agree Wayne! I had mine installed in Nov 08. To make matters worse, someone just shot a BB gun hole in my window and I have to have the whole bottom portion replaced. Anyone know of a petition, or some form letter?? I'm more than annoyed.
