Engineered Stone

Surely, everyone has encountered the engineered stone issue, directly or indirectly, sooner or later, you'll notice that these new materials are appearing frequently in homes, offices, shopping centres and other public places.

Is this a trend? Yes. Will it last? I really don't know. What I can tell you is that these new materials (they've been around for more than 30 years) have great visibility nowadays and have been well marketed by some American and European companies. Actually, the branding is so strong that most people, refer to engineered stone by the brand and not by the product.

One thing for sure, this product has given architects, decorators and interior designers colourful options that their had difficulty to achieve with traditional stone.

What is it?You can find marble based and quartz based engineered stone. The quartz based is the most promoted, due to it's great increase in the last few years, basically we are seeing the granite sector losing market share to these new products.

The engineered stone is 93-97% natural stone, bonded with polyester resin. It's made with italian technology which guarantees high quality standards.

Engineered stones are often also called agglomerate stones or conglomerate stones, people also refer to it as quartz. But surely, Silestone, Corian, Compac Quartz, Compac Marble, RMC and Caeserstone are also names for some of these materials.

Technically, when you have an engineered stone, in most cases it actually has better physical properties than the natural stone that is in its base. As most of natures imperfections are solved with these materials, also we can say that most of these materials are environmental friendly. Specifically the marble based material, actually uses marble that's unfit for natural stone processing.

So if you really look around you'll see hundreds of applications of engineered stone.
