English bulldog puppies grow to be stocky with broad shoulders and head width. As an adult they will weigh 50-55 pounds and become 12-14 inches tall. There are some breeds of miniature english bulldog puppies that have an adult weight of 20-40 pounds and a height of 12-14 inches tall. These dogs have an under bite, droopy lips, a short muzzle, thick folds of skin on their faces, and round dark eyes that are far apart. Bulldogs have a short coat that is smooth and come in many colors. These colors are usually brindle, fawn, red and white.

Even though the English bulldog can look intimidating, they can be affectionate and dependable. They are also known for being good guard dogs. They have a  reputation for being stubborn and persistent. They love human attention and will seek out. This is important for the dog to be happy. Because of the dog’s need to dominate, the owner needs to be able to stand his ground and not let the dog push him around. You can tell if your dog is displaying signs of dominance if they are guarding their toys, food or places in the house. You can keep them from doing this by showing them that you are their leader with training. It is better to be the boss, especially because the dog is not really happy trying to keep his human under his thumb, it’s actually quite stressful for him.

Buying a puppy is a huge responsibility. One should have plenty of time to devote to the job, especially at the beginning. You’ll have to teach your new family member everything. You would be surprised that you even have to teach him how to go down the stairs. You will also have to be able to house train the dog. You may decide that litter training him would best suit your situation, using a dog kennel for this can be helpful. This process can actually be a lot of fun. If you have yet to become a parent, and you would like to know what it is like, a dog can be a small glimpse into what the experience can be like.

Grooming English Bulldogs

As far as grooming is concerned they are actually quite easy to maintain.  You only need to comb their coat with a bristle brush every few days and give them a bath when it is necessary. This breed does not shed more or less than most breeds. It is important fact the folds of their bodies must be cleaned on a daily basis to keep infections from growing within them. Since their tails curl so tightly against their bodies they will also need to be maintained in this fashion.

English Bulldog Puppy Personalities

You should keep in mind that although breeds tend to have certain personality traits, the individual will always have their own personalities. You as the owner have a huge impact on what type of personality that dog will have by the way you raise it. As puppies you can still tell what type of personality they may have as adults. Whenever you are looking at english bulldog puppies for sale, there are five different personalities that you may be able to recognize.

  • The anxious one: tends to be unpredictable and may misbehave with small children.
  • The independent one: is self-assured, which may require a good education. Can be a very good working dog and is a very good pet for adults. This personality may not do so well with children.
  • The dominant one: this personality tends to be rebellious. This dog will be very good with an experienced owner to be trained as a guard dog. This is because this dog will always challenge its owner.
  • The docile one: this personality is obedient and very stable.
  • The next personality is also docile but also has an increased need to be affectionate and is quite suitable for children.

There are a series of tests that can help determine what type of personality the puppy has. Your breeder should be able to tell you what type puppy they have.

English Bulldog Health

Before buying an English bulldog puppy you should know that the breed has some health traits to be concerned about. These dogs are known to have breathing due to the shortness and shape of their muzzles. There actually known to snore loudly believe it or not. Some of these dogs can develop cysts in between their toes, which can be removed by a vet. Bulldogs require daily exercise just like all dogs. If they are allowed to become overweight they could have heart and lung issues in the future. These dogs are sensitive to heat. Make sure to keep an eye on them during the summer and when exercising for prolonged periods of time. Make sure they get plenty of water and breaks in the shade.

Old English Bulldog History

The Old English Bulldog was muscular and compact. Typically they grow to be 15 inches tall and 45 pounds in weight. One characteristic of the breed is a jaw that is like a vise grip because of a tendency for the lower jaw to project in front of the upper jaw. These dogs no longer exist today, but they are ancestor of the English Bulldog.

There was a sport in England called bull baiting. This happened during the time of Queen Anne of Great Britain. It was performed in London at Hockley in the Hole normally twice a week. The point of the sport was for the Bulls to be a mobilized by the dogs. The nose of the dog what inset into the dogs face, which enabled him to be able to breath while he had the bull clamped in between his teeth.

Historians believe that the old English bulldog came from war dogs such as this the old Mastiff or Alaunt.  Later on due to the Cruelty to Animals Act in 1835 dog fighting and bull baiting declined. This led to a disinterest in continuing the Old English Bulldog line.

Even though there were laws that outlawed dog fighting and bull baiting, its still continued for many years. Breeders continued to look for a fighting dog that it had superior quickness and better dexterity. This led to the extinction of the old English bulldog.
