English chintz is beautiful: eye-catching and charming

Collecting chintz can be a satisfying hobby, a way to showcase some beautiful pieces of art.

India produced some colorful patterns in the 17th century, which found their way on to cotton fabric, and, thus, chintz was named.

These beautiful patterns started showing up on tableware items and soon had an adoring public.

  • Collectors look for chintz items produced from the 1920s-1960s.
  • Most chintz pieces are marked on the bottom with the manufacturer's mark and include the pattern name.

Collecting English Chintz China

Chintz Teapots

Chintz Teapots are a favorite collector's item. Chintz teapots are nice to have on hand for special occasions or, if you feel your teapot is much too pretty to use, it can sit atop a cupboard or makes a nice addition to your china cabinet.

Collecting chintz teapots is addicting, though. There are so many pretty designs to choose from--and It's hard to stick to just one or two!

I love the 'old cottage chintz" design. I only started collecting last year and have only found a sugar and creamer and 5 cups and saucers. I'm going to an auction at the end of june all just china and such I can hardly wait maybe I'll be lucky and find extras to my set.

Great hub regards Zsuzsy

Hi Zsuzsy bee,

Yes, chintz is so beautiful. I'm addicted! Keep an eye on the E-bay auctions because you can pick up Chintz from there for good deals. The reproduction chintz is lovely, too.

I've been wanting to collect chintz myself but I haven't found any time yet. But you're right, E-bay should help me on that problem... Thanks for a wonderful hub!

You can get some good deals on chintz through E-bay, if you watch the actions and check prices ahead of time.

Athlyn and Zsuzsy Bee, right now I'm holding a four-part squarish candy or condiment dish which appears to be Old Cottage chintz, but ISN'T. Don't remember where I got it...yard sale most likely...but on the bottom are the words

ERPKIER

Art Pottery

Czeche Slovakia

Also a number: 3080

Only mention this because I too love English Chintz, but obviously other potteries, in other countries, made pieces with patterns nearly identical to EC, so beware!

CORRECTION: Boy, do I feel dumb! The company is ERPHILA, and the pattern is Warwick, which apparently DOES qualify as chintz. I got curious and Item #190232013374 at Ebay is the same shape and style but in the Dorset pattern (but mine doesn't have handles or holes for handles). However, the center of Item #310041149300 is the Warwick pattern, gray lines and all.

I'll trundle off now and tape this information to the dish! Interesting hub!

Hi jamaGenee,

Objects that a have a history are so interesting, aren't they? It's neat to have something that has been around for some years.

I forgot to add that the Victoria and Albert museum has one of the world's most fantastic collection of chintz textiles incase you are interested (:( i've only ever seen the catalogue and nearly died) and the other great collections are apparently at the royal ontario museum in toronto, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. If any of you are interested in classic textiles and if you're ever in India do go and check out the Calico Museum of Textiles in Ahmedabad in Gujarat (the western most state in India)
