Speak Fluent English - DOOR-TO- DOOR SELLING

Mr.Rao has been employed by Technical sales in the capacity of a door-to-door salesman. His job is to make a kind of consumer survey as well as to try to sell the company’s products.

Mr.Rao (Ringing the front door bell) Good morning, Madam. I am Rao from Technical sales.

PR: wait... I: wait... L: wait... LD: wait... I: wait...wait... Rank: wait... Traffic: wait... Price: wait... C: wait...

Ringing the front door bell

Lady Yes?

Mr.Rao I am a salesman, I was wondering whether you could give me some information about the brands of light bulbs that you use.

Lady I’m sorry I don’t know anything about electrical things. My husband buys all this stuff.

Mr.Rao could I then just has a look at the bulbs and find out what brand they are?

Lady No, I’m sorry I haven’t the time now. Perhaps you should come another day when my husband is home.

Mr.Rao Thank you, madam. I’m sorry to have disturbed you.

Rao walks over to the next house and rings the bell.

Mr.Rao Good morning Madam. I am  Salesman Rao from Technical Sales. I am making a Market survey about the relative popularity of the various brands of electric bulbs and tubes.

Second Lady Do come in. I am Mrs.Vasudeva. i am a housewife . What information do you want . Mr.Rao.

Mr.Rao What brand of electric bulbs do you use, Madam?.I need this information for improvement of our company products.

Mr.Vasudeva I think we buy brand Cita. Actually many times, in an emergency we just send the servant to the bazaar and he brings any kind of bulbs that the dealer gives him.

Mr. Rao But don’t you have a preference for any particular brand that you find functioning well?

Mrs.Vasudeva You see, with us it doesn’t work like that. Normally we collect all the fused bulbs and every now and then my husband has them changed at the M.E.S. My husband is in the Armed Services. You Know

Mr. Rao So that means that you get whatever brand the M.E.S supplies? Do you use fluorescent tubes?

Mrs. Vasudeva No. The M.E.S (Military Engineering Services) does not supply tube lights for residential houses.

Mr. Rao I see I wonder whether you should like to try out the new bulb which my company has produced? This bulb is more resistant to voltage fluctuations and is relatively fuse resistant.

Mrs. Vasudeva Well, I don’t really require a bulb. But I’ll take one just because you’ve taken all the trouble to come here.

various brands of electric bulbs and tubes.

Mr. Rao Why don’t you have a tube light fixed in the children room or the sitting room that you use the most? A fluorescent tube gives more light and consumes less electricity. It would be more economical and your overall electric bill would be reduced.

Mrs. Vasudeva How much does it cost from you as salesman.

Mr. Rao The whole set of the equipment including the tube light, choke and starter costs about Rs. 250/- due to direct selling. The price also depends on the size of the tube you want.

Mrs. Vasudeva That is too expensive an item for me to take a decision about or buy from any salesperson.. You should sell items to my husband sometimes. Here is the money for the bulb.

Mr. Rao Thank you Mrs. Vasudeva for your courtesy. I’ll call again and hope to sell products to  your husband.

Mr. Rao visits a third house for door to door selling ..

Mr. Rao Mrs. Rosario? Good morning madam. I am Rao from Technical Sales. I am doing a consumer survey of electric lighting systems.

Mrs. Rosario Come in. Do have a questionnaire for me to fill in?

Mr. Rao Not exactly Madam. I am taking notes on consumer’s experiences with various brands. Actually my company makes brand citu of light bulbs and tubes. Have you heard of this brand?

Mrs. Rosario Yes, I have.

Mr. Rao Have you bought our product?

Mrs.Rosario No, not yet.

Mr. Rao Madam, who makes the decision in your house about buying electrical equipment? Your husband or you?

Mrs. Rosario My husband is too busy with his work. So unless the item to be bought is a very expensive one. I do all the shopping.

Mr. Rao Do you use tube light?

Mrs. Rosario Yes. In the kitchen, in the living room and in the veranda.

Mr. Rao Thank you Madam, that is very informative. Now, about the brands you use, do you prefer a particular one?

Mrs. Rosario We prefer brand nite, because it is made by a company with foreign collaboration.

Mr. Rao Do you feel that Indian technical skill is not good enough?

Mrs. Rosario It is not that. It is just that brand nite has an international image

Mr. Rao Would you consider using our brand cite? It is wholly Indian made, but it is longer lasting and more economical. If it fuses before lighting for 1000 hours, we’ll give a free replacement.

Mrs. Rosario All right, I’ll try out your bulbs. Will you give me six pieces

Mr. Rao Thank you Madam, hear are six bulbs and here is my address. If you have any pr

(C) Study the following responses

1 In the case of electrical goods, the salesman should have gone on his round in the evening when the man of the house is at home.

Response Perhaps it is true that the purchase of technical items like electrical goods may be done by the man of house. But visiting the house in the evening, when the man has returned after a full day at work, may prove to be even more irritating. Interviewing the ladies also provided valuable data. It appears that bulbs, a low cost item, is bought by the lady or any one else. It is in the matter of the purchase of the more expensive tube that the man would have a say. Again, in respect of such items, the dealer’s advice would be sought

2 What impression do you gain about the reception given to the surveyor or sale man?

Response In India people are not yet accustomed to or used to people making surveys. On the whole, people are suspicious of door to-door salesmen. But gradually this resistance is breaking down

(D) Make suitable responses

Sitting in his narrow office, John Kessel reclines in his black, worn desk chair, hands locked behind his head, staring straight up at the ceiling. He contemplates his words, using "sullen" and "obsessively" in common conversation, amidst the rows of books that fill his short and tall bookshelves.
