Fruits and vegetables are both different in flavor and nutrients. Fruits are more sweet and juicy. Vegetables have to be cooked with salt and pepper to taste. Not very often you can eat raw vegetables but you can always eat fresh fruits. Some vegetables that can be eaten fresh are cucumber, carrots, tomatoes and lettuce. Fruits are grown from the flowers of a plant and vegetables are parts of plants that are edible. A vegetable can either be a stem, root, tuber or leaf of a plant.
Some of the most common vegetables in the world are rice, wheat, grains, cassava, carrots and cauliflower. Common fruits are banana, apples, grapes, strawberry and a long list of others too numerable to mention. The fruits found in the tropics are different from those grown in cold climates. Fruits have more water content than vegetables. They contain different vitamins and minerals. Most common minerals found in fruits are potassium, calcium, zinc, iron and magnesium whereas vegetables contain more sulfur, carbohydrates, proteins and phosphorous.
Certain fruits can be called vegetables and vegetables can be called fruits. In scientific terms, if a vegetable contain seeds and grow from a flower, it is regarded as a fruit. But in culinary terms, tomatoes, zucchini, squash and pumpkin are known as vegetables, because they have to be cooked to add savory. Fruits and vegetables contain healing and medicinal properties to cure diseases and maintain good health.
Fruits like pineapple, can aid digestion, helps in constipation and jaundice. Other fruits like strawberry, raspberry, cranberry and grapefruit are rich in fiber, calcium, and potassium. Corn contains folate, potassium, fiber and lutein. Sulfur compounds found in cabbage and broccoli protect against cancer. Vegetables that contain protein are peas, beans, and lentils which are a substitute for meat. Rice and wheat contain carbohydrate. Onion and garlic contain sulfur. The vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables can heal, restore cells, strengthen bones and prevent diseases.
The water content found in fruits and vegetables supply some of the water we need in our bodies. In certain countries, where clean water is scare or not available, fruits and vegetables help people from becoming dehydrated. Fruits come in many varieties and rich in nutrients. They are available without cooking for our diet. Leafy vegetables are spinach and lettuce, tubors are potatoes and carrots, bulbs are onions and garlic, and stem are celery. Then you have grains like rice, barley, oats are different vegetables. Some vegetables can be both fruit and vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes and cabbage.
The amount of nutrients found in fruits and vegetables will keeps us healthy and restore the tissues of our body, prevent diseases, heal ailments and protect against obesity.
