Being Eco friendly doesn't have to be a burden. There are a lot of laptops or desktops out there that do meet the EPA standards according to hazard material, carbon emissions, packaging, life and disposal of products.

So believe it or not, buying an environmentally friendly computers doesn't mean it doesn't work better than the other notebooks or computers. All it means is that these computers that I will list in a second, are energy savers and/or reduce the amount of carbon in to our atmosphere. Some are made mostly of all recycled material or mostly recycled material and use material that is non toxic to the environment and also in limiting the amount of waste in packaging.

They are given ratings according the EPEAT which is in compliance with the EPA which are rated as either bronze, silver or gold. I decided to skip the bronze and silver and just go for the gold in product listing but will leave a link below so you can decide which computer would be best for you.

Listed Price @ $1,494.00

Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop

List Price: $1,499.00

Apple Macbook Pro

Eco Details: 13.3" display made with mercury free LED back lighting display, recyclable aluminum and glass, BFR free, PVC free internal cables, 5 Star energy requirements, reduced packaging volume.

All that and it weighs just under 5lbs, it is just under and inch thick and totally recyclable! Plus Mac is known for its "invincibility" when it comes to viruses and spyware and longevity of the computer.

HP Elitebook

Eco Details: 5 star energy saver. The site says it qualified as silver but EPEAT says it qualifies as gold. Again you can check in the link left below. External 90 watt AC smart card adapter for fast charge.

Tech Details: Intel 2 Duo Core Processor, 2GB RAM (max capacity upgrade 8GB), DVD+RW drive, 14.1 anti-glare screen, 3 USB ports, firewire, microphone/audio in/out, 1 express card 54 slot, media card slot, secure digital slot, built in WiFi and bluetooth and webcam.

It also weighs just under 5lbs and comes with Windows Vista and 3 year warranty. I think this one is okay but the Apple Macbook Pro seems to beat this one by a landslide when it comes to environmentally friendly product usage.

Mini HP laptop

Eco Details: 10.1" LED Display, 5 Star qualified energy efficiency EPEAT gold.

Tech. Specs: 1.60 GHz Intel Atom Processor N270, 1024 MB memory, 16GB hard drive, Intel Graphics Media accelerator, Ethernet LAN, WiFi, Express card 54 slot, 2 USB ports, microphone/stereo in/out IPhone compatible, 1 notebook expansion port and webcam. It weighs about 2.5 lbs. Uses Linux windows operating system.

Dell Latitude

Eco Details: 19 hour battery life!!!! Gold star rated with the EPEAT.

Tech Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 13.3" LED display, 128GB hard drive and up to 8GB Memory (with Vista), DVD-ROM, CDRW/DVD, DVD +/-RW or Travel Lite Module, Ethernet interface adapter, WiFi, bluetooth, audio/video in/out put, firewire, docking connector, build in microphone, and it weighs about 3.5 lbs, 2 USB ports and HDMI output.

Note: Dells are customizable, as it is this Dell does not come with a build in webcam. You would also have to specify your needs when putting this PC together ie: do you need a computer with maximized gamer or video editing capabilities, is this a computer that you need solely for work etc?

These Dells are also made from partly recycled material. From reading other customer reviews, most negative reviews were based on case durability and webcam quality. However you do have the option of buying external web cams and also upgrading you Dell with extra USB ports.

The Green Award Goes to....

Overall I would give the Green PC award to the Apple Macbook Pro for it's integrity for being environmentally friendly, its technical specifications, its looks and its price.

Second runner up would be the Dell for it's extraordinarily energy efficient battery and customizable options.

The HPs, while on the Gold star list with EPEAT, I give a 3 star because of its lack of usage or recycled material, it's price and technical specs. Seems to me you pay more and get less with the HP.
