Does your ethical investing include the environmentally friendly?

Because of its nature, "ethics" has many different meanings to different people. For some people, it is important to bring ethics into their personal financial planning. This is especially important in Christian financial planning. But what is ethical investing? Well, it depends on who you are. In my book, ethical investing also includes considering environmental considerations.

Environmentally friendly investing

To me, ethical investing is about more than whether a company supports a "culture of life" as narrowly defined by one political party. Instead, my idea of ethical investing encompasses a wide variety of ideals that also include a company's track record of charity and its environmental practices. How you define ethical investing is largely up to you.

However, when God first gave Adam and Eve stewardship over the earth, He was doing more than just saying "use it for whatever you want." He was also saying, "Take care of it and use it wisely." We are stewards, just as one reads about in the parable of the talents. It is our job not only to use what we have been given, but to also multiply it and replenish it.

This is where environmentally friendly investing comes in. In my book, investing in companies with ethical practices toward the environment helps me keep my financial planning more Christian. I am supporting companies that look at other resources that God has blessed us with, including the wind, water and sun, to help preserve this lovely earth that has been created for us.

Miranda,

My wife Laura and I were just talking about this tonight. While there are many investment opportunities out there, we are focusing our attention on ethical investments that help promote sustainable manufacturing, farming, and distribution. We are starting with the products we buy each week at Wild Oats and expanding our research from there.

Excellent choice. If you choose carefully, you can make money AND feel good about what you are supporting.
