Epilators - Which One Is For You And Great Epilator Tips
81So this will sound a little embarrassing, but I realized I needed an electric shaver after I started getting some hair on my you-know-what (starts with "f" ends with "e")! I started shaving and then went to tweezing because the hair was gone for so much longer, my face was smoother, and there was no stubble. Unfortunately, tweezing your face takes forever.
Luckily I came across a device called an epilator. Basically an epilator is a hand-held little machine that holds a bunch of tweezers (some epilators have 70+ tweezers). It removes the hair by just grasping them all at the same time and then pulling them out. Sounds like a horror movie, I know, but really it's a fun process (for me anyway) and not as bad as it sounds.
So What's An Epilator Consist Of?

The epilator has a big rotating piece that moves, called a head. Mounted on the head of the epilators are small tiny half discs that act as small tweezers. As the head moves in a circle, or rotates, the discs on the head come together and apart to work like a tweezer. The hair is grabbed by the discs as they close in on it and is then removed when the head rotates. This whole process happens very quickly. You can see the tiny discs on the head of the epilator to the right. The picture is of the Epilady Braun 5270 x'elle.
What Are Some Other Things I Should Know?
Epilating basically works like really fast tweezing or waxing. So because of that, depending on how fine your hair is, some hair that is tweezed may just cut off instead of it all being grabbed like normal tweezing or waxing. The great part is that as you continue to do it, the chances of hair breaking off instead of being completely pulled out become less to then null as your hair will become finer after regular use of epilating.
Epilators can also be pretty loud. I have 2 epilators and they both sound like little engines. The first time using them can be pretty intimidating, but you will get used to it quickly.
Which Epilator Is Right For Me?
If you're looking for your first epilator to buy, I'd buy a smaller more affordable one. Epilating's not for everyone so give an epilator that's specific to a certain part of your body a try first. Your local beauty store will most likely have facial epilators that can cost around $20-25. If you can't get one locally (I have to drive 35 minutes to the nearest store that carries one) then try a store online such as Wal-Mart or Target.
Target has the first one I've used (and still have) for $19.99. The Emjoi Epi Slim Hair Removal Epilator (pictured to the right) is one of the best affordable epilators you can buy and great for testing. Because of its size it's meant for travel use or small areas such as your chin, upper lip, underarms, or bikini line. You can use it on your legs but a bigger epilator would use less time.
There really is no downside to the Emjoi Epi Slim Epilator. It makes a great first "training" epilator.
The Braun Silk-épil
The best epilator I've ever used is the Braun Silk-épil. I'll try to sum it up by saying that it's just awesome. The epilator is around $55 dollars depending on where you get it and you won't be disappointed. The head is bigger with more tweezers and also comes with shaving attachments, a baggy, and a head cleaner. It has two settings (low and high) and also comes with a light. It also has a couple of head attachments, one of which has massage sides on them.
Don't get epilators that cost around $100; they're pointless.
Epilator Tips
- Take a pain medication such as Advil or Tylenol about 30 minutes before you start to help with the pain that can come with epilating. The more you do it, the more you won't need it.
- EXFOLIATE EXFOLIATE EXFOLIATE. Get a luffa and exfoliate before and after.
- Make sure your body is CLEAN before epilating. No lotions or anything.
- Some epilators are water proof but most are not. Make sure you read the manual for your epilator. The two mentioned on this page ARE NOT WATER PROOF.
- Make sure the epilator is perpendicular to your body and not parallel.
Epilating is so much better than shaving for obvious reasons. I love epilating over waxing too. When it comes to waxing, you have to wait for the hair to grow fully back before you can even wax again and that's such a pain in the butt.
Have fun epilating!
